ECOLOGICAL AND DEVELOPMENT HISTORY OF VARIOUS SECTORS IN HRML PI: Amruth M. Dept. Sociology,KFRI Duration of Study: 12 Months Budget Estimate: 10,65,350.00

Objectives Reconstruct ecological history of the various natural and human modified land cover categories in the HRML. To make an assessment of various human factors, agencies, infrastructure and enterprise development that have effected desirable or undesirable changes in the HRML.

Objectives To identify various traditional and modern institutions currently in place in the HRML; their historical trajectories and caste, class, community affiliations; their functional roles and degree of influence they exert on the communities their relevance in effective biodiversity conservation and amenability to other institutions and organisations .

Tasks Review of Geological, Geomorphological , Bioclimatological and Vegetational changes in HRML Documentation of changes in selected ecological units Description of changes in the vegetation and drivers of these changes. Review of historical process on land-cover categories over the past two centuries. Review of major developmental sectors and developmental interventions

Tasks To identify, characterise and critically evaluate drivers of changes in the landscape and provide possible implications of these for the future management of biological diversity in the landscape. Elicit the evolution of interest groups in HRML and their propensity to participate in the management of HRML Describe the evolution of governmental, quasi-governmental, voluntary and Non-government organisational network in HRML; analyse their integration, cross linkages, inter-institutional communications and compatibility for HRML programme

Expected output Detailed report of the ecological past, drivers and changes to various ecological elements in the HRML. Listing of various development activities, projects, drivers of change, agencies and agents of developments, institutions and their impacts on the indigenous and migrant settler communities in the HRML. Historical sociology of various social groups their historical affinities to development, conservation and their amenability to institutionalisation. Review of development trajectories of various communities and social institutions that have consequences to implementation of HRML programme activities .

Expected output Final report with detailed sketch of : Reconstruction of Ecological past at geological scales Compilation of benchmark information on various aspects of ecology and processes in the HRML Identification and characterisation of major developmental processes, institutions and their consequences on conservation of biological diversity Reconstructing the Post- 1950 scenario- processes, institutions, drivers Current scenario-Patterns, processes, institutions and drivers Publication of final report
