Developing and supporting high-performing Faculty teams in engineering institutions Thanikachalam Vedhathiri [email protected]
Qualities of High-performing faculty Teams High-performing faculty teams contribute to knowledge capital through interdisciplinary research and development programs They focus on achievement and plan to overcome all bottlenecks They cooperate with the team members, administrators, and clients at all times They usually encourage team members to achieve excellence They share the planned steps to complete a complex project They earnestly communicate and inspire under all circumstances
Basic elements Trust the team members Clear communication Defined roles of the team members and responsibilities in complex projects Exhibits engaged leadership They progress through collective goals The team leader takes the blame for failures Share the credit with all team members Listen to the team members Make effective decisions
Role of a team member Deliver high results Learn basics to advancements Learn on the job Responsible and accountable for team tasks Execute the tasks effectively and quickly Resolve the conflicts quickly
Team members’ skills Problem Analysis Problem-solving Interpersonal skills Training the novice, if needed Allocating responsibility to everyone Accountability for all Committed to project goals
High-performing faculty members Expertise in their field and continuous learning Innovative problem-based curriculum to enhance the learners’ attributes Innovative transformation process to ensure high-quality graduates Interdisciplinary Research oriented Linked to industry, if needed Learner-centered approach Highly ethical and respect for equity Achievement orientation Supportive and appreciative leadership
Expectations of high-performing faculty teams High-performing faculty teams are about 3% to 5% Most of the high-performing faculty teams have intrinsic motivation Expect more delegation of authority, empowerment, and transparency in decision-making, forwarding the letters of invitation, no discrimination, sharing the project gains based on the norms, and no corruption. No micromanagement in the project administration
Code of Ethics (Minnesota University ) Faculty members shall provide professional education services in a nondiscriminatory manner Shall take reasonable disciplinary action in exercising the authority to provide an atmosphere conducive to learning Shall not use professional relationships with students, parents, and colleagues to private advantage Shall not knowingly falsify or misrepresent records or facts to that teacher’s qualification or other teacher’s qualifications Shall not knowingly make false or malicious statements about students or colleagues Shall accept a contract for executing a project as per the norms and rules

Desired decisions to facilitate high-performing faculty teams Accelerate the growth of faculty teams Facilitate the high-performing faculty teams Support innovations Create project-specific faculty teams Include graduate students Offer project credits Audit the outcomes and eliminate bottlenecks Permit the inclusion of industry specialists
Consultancy Projects in Safety
Sharing the project gains as per the rules and norms Estimate the total cost of the project carefully Negotiate and get the approval for payments Meet all the direct project expenditures from the project earning Remit 50% to the institute as its share for providing resources Share the balance 50% with the project faculty and support staff
Projects in Electrical and Electronics
Institutional development Through High-Performing Faculty Teams Communicate letters of invitation received from IDAs, Various Ministries, and Private Companies to the departments Facilitate the departments to bid for the projects Assist in preparing technical proposals Assist in assessing the financial proposals Train the faculty teams in careful negotiation Provide needed resources and seed funds
planned Industrial Exposure Creating effective links with state industries in the industrial corridors and hubs Offering executive development projects Permitting to undergo internships in “ Analysis- Design-Prototype Development- Testing-Improving- Mass Production- Marketing-Maintenance- Scrapping- Planning Innovative products” Expose the students to industries Guide the graduate students to undertake dissertations based on the industrial problems Grant project grants to the graduate students
Industry-specific Programs Undertake industry-specific graduate programs Offer dual/sandwich programs Offer credits for undergoing industrial training Offer electives in consultation with companies Permit planning of interdisciplinary postgraduate programs Conduct cooperative courses Collaborate with local/state/regional companies Establish satellite institutes in the industrial corridors
Facilitating faculty competencies Permit the faculty teams to undertake industry-sponsored projects Offer needed finishing school programs to the graduates Consult the alumni on the development of disruptive technology Conduct tracer studies Get the feedback from the employers Plan workshops on the current technologies Establish a consultancy centre Scaffold the high-performing faculty teams
Support Radical innovations Establish a culture of appreciation for the successful project completion Encourage newly recruited faculty members to join project teams Create a global network with international organizations like UNESCO, UNDP, USAID, the Asian Development Bank, and the World Bank Facilitate the conduct of national conferences on the advancement of technologies Facilitate the growth of radical innovations Encourage the production of monographs on industrial practices Include industrial experts in the curriculum evaluation
Sponsored Product Development Undertake industry-sponsored product development Encourage capstone projects Facilitate startup and growth of entrepreneurship Recognize the achievement of the faculty teams Conduct open house programs Organize leadership development workshops
Scaffold High-performing Teams
Impact of High-performing faculty Teams Growth of Industry-sponsored programs Improvements in placement of graduates More internal revenue generation Improvement in the reputation of the institute Growth of research papers Substantial improvements in human capital Recognition of faculty leadership
Global impact due to high-performing faculty teams’ contribution
