INTRODUCTION All professionals have concern for the quality of their services, which is ensured by developing and enforcing the standards. Accreditation is a nongovernmental process conducted by professional groups in which, accreditation focuses on the quality of institutions and educational programs within institutions.
The program of action of the national policy on education (NPE) 1986, has proposed the establishment of an Accreditation and Assessment Council(AAC) for maintaining and raising the quality of the institution of higher education.
Accreditation Institutional accreditation professional accreditation
Institutional accreditation concerns itself total institution,assessing the achievement of the institution in meeting its own stated mission, goals and expected outcomes. Professional or specialized accreditation is concerned with programs of study in professional or occupational fields.
DEFINITION Acc to Selden,1962 “ Accreditation is the process whereby an organization or agency recognize a college or university or programme of study as having met certain pre determined qualifications or standards ”. OR Accrediting is carried on mainly by voluntary organizations. Although these organization are advisory in nature and do not have legal power to control institutions of higher education.
PURPOSE Maintenance of adequate administration requirement. Maintain a uniform standard for nursing education and nursing service . Stimulation of institutional self –improvement by evaluation and inspection. Protection of institutions of higher education against educationally and socially harmful pressures. It help in the registration of nurses. It prescribe the syllabus. It grants recognizition to school and colleges. It guides the school/college of nursing, according to recommendation and criteria.
FUNCTION OF ACCREDITATION: It aims to protect the autonomy of various health service programmes. eg:Nursing education and medical education. It preserves the quality of nursing education. It protects the institutions unsound and unsafe political pressure. It helps the practitioner for the broad scope of nursing practice.

TYPES OF ACCREDITATION : National agencies National professional accreditating agencies State accrediting bodies .
National accrediting agencies are concerned with as institution as a whole. They are concerned with total activities of the institution of higher learning and with safeguard the quality of education and foundation of professional programmes in colleges and universities. Each agency establishes criteria for the evaluation of institutions. NATIONAL ACCREDITATION AGENCIES :
Central advisory board of education All India counsil for elementary education All India counsil for secondary education University grant commission All India counsil for technical education National assessment and accreditation counsil All India educational counsils.
NATIONAL PROFESSIONAL ACCREDITING AGENCY : Professional accreditating is supported by state licensure laws. Individuals who have a desire to attain high vocational status tends to form professional organization . These professional organization aim to improve service to the public and the number of individuals admitted to the profession.

STATE ACCREDITATING AGENCIES: state universities commissions and other agency are authorized in some state to evaluate college, to give initial approval to institutions to higher learning to formulate standards, to issue licenses and to have various other responsibilities.
ACCREDITATION IN NURSING EDUCATION PROGRAMME:
A BOARD APPROVAL OF THE INITIAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE NURSING PROGRAM: Letter of intention should be submitted to the board, describing the reasons for establishing the school and the predicted timetable of development.
CONTD… 2 Qualification forms to be submitted to the board ,by the full time person responsible for the programe,who is qualified with the master degree in nursing and with appropriate preparation for administration in nursing education. 3.The nursing director or chairman of the department nursing will be employed on a full time basis for one academic year before the admission of students to the nursing programs this period is known as the “Planning year”.
BOARD APPROVAL FOR THE ADMISSION OF STUDENTS: 1. A statement describing the philosophy, objectives nature of organization and administration should be submitted to the board, at least three weeks prior to the board meeting: 2 The statement should contain description of the following as well: Student body: (number of students to be admitted to the first batch ) Faculty: number to be employed, dates of appointment, for faculty recruitment, qualification members.
BENEFITS OF A NURSING DEGREE FROM ACCREDIATED SCHOOL OR PROGRAM
FINANCIAL AIDS Students studying at accredited schools and programs are eligible for state and federal financial and programs. Government grants , student loans and work-study funds cannot be used to pay for unaccredited nursing programs. Private foundations and companies that offer scholarships may also requires that applicants attend an accredited school or programs to be eligible
TRANSFER CREDITS Students moving from an accredited nursing school to a different associate or bachelor’s degree program does not face many problems as most of colleges and universities will only accept transfer hours from accredited nursing program.
GRADUATE EDUCATION Nurses must have bachelor’s degree from an accredited school in order to apply to a master degree program otherwise in healthcare field without accreditation the course is unaccepted.
STANDARD INTRODUCTION The standards, along with the accreditation procedures, serve as the basis to evaluate the quality of the educational program. offered and to hold the program accountable to , the nursing profession, and the public.
DEFINITION Standards are the set of documents that provide rules or guidelines to achieve order in a given context. OR Standards are the levels which give a level of quality or attainment for comparison.
PURPOSE Serve as a guide for the development of new nursing education programs. Provide criteria for the evaluation and approval of new and established nursing education program. Foster the continued improvement of established nursing education programs. Ensure that graduates of nursing education programs are prepared for safe nursing practice. Assure eligibility for admission to the licensure examination for nurses.
STANDARD I. PROGRAM QUALITY: MISSION AND GOVERNANCE The mission, goals, and expected outcomes are similar with those of the parent institution, reflect professional nursing standards and consider the needs and expectation, of the community of interest and continuing advancement and improvement of the program.
CONTD… Policies of the parent institution and nursing program clearly support the program’s mission, goals, and expected outcomes. The faculty and students of the program are involved in the governance are clearly defined and enable meaningful participation
STANDARD II. INSTITUTIONAL COMMITMENT AND RESOURCES The parent institution demonstrates ongoing commitment and support. The institution makes available resources to enable the program to achieve its mission, goals, and expected outcomes. The faculty, as a resource of the program, enables the achievement of the mission, goals, and expected outcomes of the programme .
STANDARD III. CURRICULUM AND TEACHING-LEARNING PRACTICES The curriculum is developed in accordance with the mission, goals, and expected outcomes of the program and reflects professional nursing standards and guidelines and the needs and expectations of the community of interest. There is similar between teaching-learning experiences and expected outcomes. The environment for teaching, learning and evaluation of student performance foster achievement of the expected outcomes.
STANDARD IV. PROGRAME EFFECTIVENESS: STUDENT PERFORMANCE AND FACULTY The program is effective in fulfilling its mission, goals, and expected outcomes. Actual student learning outcomes are consistent with the mission, goals, and expected outcomes of the program.
CONTD… Alumni satisfaction and the accomplishments of graduates of the program at test to the effectiveness of the program. Data on program effectiveness are used to foster ongoing improvement.
