AIDS

MODIFICATION OF DIET
HIGH PROTEIN DIET SHOULD BE GIVEN
HIGH CARBOHYDRATE DIET SHOULD
BE GIVEN
MCTs SHOULD BE GIVEN
SOLUBLE FIBERS SHOULD BE GIVEN

NUTRITIONAL REQUIRMENTS
ENERGY-It should be raised upto 10-20%
PROTIEN-It should be increased by 1.5-2g/kg body
weight for repletion
-FATS-MCTs shouid be given(in case of diarrhoe n
vomating avoid visible fats
FLUID &ELECTROLYTES- Fluid needs in HIV
infected individuals are similar to those of normol
individuals and are calculated to be
30-35ml/kg.Addition amounts are required to
compensate for losses from
dairrhoe,nausea,vomating.

VITAMINS & MINERALS-the amount of
some vitamins & mineral like beta carotene,vit
E,ascorbic acid,vit B12 & folic acid should be
increased.
Supplementation of selenium with 70mg/day
would benefit the patient.
Those who are taking inadequate diet
vitamin-mineral supplementation should be
taken.

NUTRITIONAL MANAGEMENT
OF COMMON ARV SIDE EFFECT
ANOREXIA
.eat small amount and frequent meals.
.eat favourite foods
.select foods that are rich in energy
.take multivitamins
.avoid strong smelling foods
NAUSEA & VOMATING
.eat small quantities of food at frequent intervals
.drink after meals and limit intake of fluid with meals

.limit salt intake and eat foods to clam the
stomach
.sip oral rehydration solutions if vomating
.rest between meals
.avoid having empty stomach for too long
.avoid laying down after eating
CHANGE OR LOSS OF TASTE-
.use flavour enhancers such as salt,spices,or
lemon

.chew food well and move around in mouth to
stimulates receptor.
CONSTIPATION-
.Eat foods high in fiber content
.Drink plenty of fluids
.Exercise regularly according to capacity
.Avoid processed or refined
DIARRHOE-
.Drink plenty of fluids

.continue eating during after illness
.Prepare and drink ORS regularly
.Eat banana or potatoes to replace potassium &
sodium
.Take soluble fiber foods (like
oranges,mangoes,oatres,and legumes)
.If diarrhoea is severe check for lactose
intolerance,Decrease intake of dairy products
and see if Diarrhoea improves.Lactose
intolerance is often temporary

.Seek medical care if there is blood in diarrhoea
.Avoid fried foods
.Reduce the amount of dietary fat
FEVER-
.Drink plenty of fluids
.Eat energy and nutrient dense foods
.Eat small,frequent meals
