What is fertilizer? Any substance,which supplies one or more than one mineral elements essential for plant growth. In other words,any artificial or natural materials ,which makes the soil fertile for profitable crop production is called fertilizer. Two main types 1 .Manures 2.inorganic fertilizer

Manures(organic fertilizer) Which derived from living matters(plant residues,animal wastes and excreta). It is bulky organic materials and natural sources of plant nutrients. It includes FYM or barnyard manure It is a decomposed mixture of dung and urine of cattle etc with straw and residue of fodder.

Manures Compost It is a mixture of organic residues and soil that has been piled ,moistened and allowed to decompose in a pit.It is differs from FYM in that it is mixed with soil prior to decay process.composting occurs in 2-3months. Green manure Green plants buried under the soil in their pre-mature stage.crop includes guar,pigeon pea etc.

Inorganic fertilizer It may contain one or more primary nutrients. Categories into Simple or straight fertilizer Which contain only one of the primary macronutrients, N,P,K. e.g;urea or ssp Compound ,complex or mixed fertilizer Which contain two or more than two of the primary macronutrients,N,P,K . e.g;DAP or NPK.

Differences between organic and inorganic fertilizer Generally, high application rates are necessary for organic fertilizers but comparative fewer amounts are needed for inorganic fertilizers. Organic fertilizers are considered slow release nutrients because it takes longer for soil microbes to release the nutrients so the plant can absorb them; Inorganic fertilizers have a high concentration of nutrients and readily available for plant uptake. Improvement occurs in days.

Differences cont … Organic fertilizers are renewable sustainable, bio-degradable and environment-friendly; Inorganic fertilizers are non-renewable, tend to leach or filter away from the plants requiring additional applications. Organic fertilizers are made from materials derived from living things; Inorganic fertilizers are manufactured from synthetic materials

Differences cont … Organic fertilizers are not harmful to the land and improve the physical, chemical and biological conditions of the but the use of chemical fertilizers has an adverse effect on the soil structure. Organic fertilizers are derived from living organisms or their by-products while Inorganic or synthetic fertilizers refine nutrients from inorganic sources, such as rocks, petroleum. Organic fertilizers prepared in field while inorganic fertilizers prepared in factories.

Differences cont … Organic fertilizers provides humus (the organic component of soil) to the soil while inorganic fertilizers does not humidify the soil. Organic fertilizers less rich in plant nutrients while inorganic fertilizers rich in plant nutrients. Manures contain very complex salts while inorganic fertilizers contain simple salts.

Differences cont … Organic fertilizers takes 30 days or more to decompose while inorganic fertilizers are soluble or give rapid response. Organic fertilizers contain all nutrients while inorganic fertilizers contain only specific nutrients. Manures don’t cause side effects while inorganic fertilizers cause side effects.

Differences cont … Organic manure increase the quality of soil, but yield will be lower. Comparatively heavy applications of inorganic fertilizer can burn plants and excess use of fertilizer may cause toxicity in the soil. Application of organic manure helps to prevent soil erosion as it forms water stable aggregates.

Major limitations of  organic&inorganic   fertilizers Mineral/ inorganic fertilizers Require high purchasing power Availability is an obstacle, especially in  remoteareas Need to be applied seasonally High risk in low rainfall and very high rainfall areas

Integrated farming But now it is recommended that the Integrated Farming should be used. This is a new approach to plant nutrition by obtaining the nutrients from both inorganic and organic sources to maintain and sustain soil fertility and enhance crop productivity. Use of both chemical and organic fertilizers together gives more benefits than applying them separately which increase physical and microbiological properties of the soil. This will increase the availability of nutrients as well.
