Different forms of Rapid Transit Railways

Different forms of Rapid Transit Railways Surface Railways Underground railways Elevated railway Tube railway Mass Rapid Transit system Mono Rail Sky buses

Surface Railway Most extensively used Cost of construction is lowest as the track is laid on the ground On electrified railways, improved and modern automatic signalling can be adopted for running train at faster rate

Underground tunnel It is constructed below the ground level in shallow tunnels. In this case, no road crossing is required Costly land is saved High speed of the train, increase the capacity Underground railway are safer against aerial attacks during war.

Elevated Railway It is provided on an elevation above ground level. These are constructed on continuous viaduct supported on piers, columns etc and rails held on steel decks. The platforms and even the station buildings are provided at an elevation for the convenience of the passengers.

TUBE RAILWAYS The underground railways which are constructed in tunnels at a depth of 25m or more are called tube railway. The construction is done by ‘cut and cover’ method. The area is excavated in the shape of trenches. The main aim of constructing the underground railway at such a depth is to avoid interference due to water , sewage and gas pipe lines. The cross section of the tunnels is completely circular whereas the stations are of the cylindrical form.

MRTS - Mass Rapid Transit System It is introduced for intra-urban transport with intensified development of cities, surface railways found in difficult to penetrate into core of the city. RTS, MRTS and Metro rail are proposed to solve this problem. RTS combine all the three forms i.e surface, elevated and underground

MONO rail It is provided only one elevated rail to run the trains is called mono rail. Investment of mono rail system is 30 to 40 % less than MRTS. Capacity is 1000 to 1500 passengers.

SKY BUSES Konkan railways Corporation holds the intellectual property rights. It is an indigenously designed mode of transport system. Highly flexible and safer than conventional railways. It has high end suspension system. It is considered economic than metro rail system.
