There are different types of tennis courts exist and each type of court has its own characteristic.

And not everyone can best in every types of courts.

So it clearly indicates that each type of surfaces affect the behavior of the ball and hence the player's playing style.

Let's know about different types of tennis courts.

There are mainly 4 common tennis playing surface. Such as Grass Clay Hard Indoor court surface

Grass court surface

You'll not find grass courts everywhere. Only some professional tennis places hold these type of court.

Because it's too costly to build and maintain.

Apart from that, it needs constant maintenance such as watering and mowing. Hence it needs more time to make the surface worthy to play.

It also gets affected by the harsh weather conditions.

This is the surface on which originally the tennis game was played for the first time.  

Wimbledon, the oldest and most prestigious tennis tournament is played in grass court surface.

How it affects player's game?

It's the fastest among all the tennis court surfaces. So, many players find it difficult to play.

It skids quickly off the surface and players experience a very low ball bounce.

Serve-and-valley tennis players find it great to play in this surface.

Clay surface

Like grass tennis courts, clay surfaces are also very hard to find apart from the professional tennis centers.

It requires the same high level of maintenance works as of the grass court. Hence it's too much expensive.

The court is hard-packed clay or sand covered by some loose clay or sand.

French open is played on this type of tennis surface.

How it affects player's game?

It's slowest and softest playing surfaces and the ball bounces very high here.

It creates least traction and no sudden slips.

Hence it's very easy on the player's body and especially to the player's leg (ankle, knee, and hip).

Players with heavy topspin finds this surface great to play.

Hard surface

Hard surface is the most common type of tennis playing surface made out of concrete and asphalt.

This type of surface is widely available as it's easy to build and also easy to maintain.

Major tournaments like US open and Australian open are played on hard tennis surfaces.

How it affects player's game?

Hard court surfaces are fast, but not faster than the grass surfaces.

Players with big serves and big forehands find it great to play in this surface.

It presents a predictable bounce of the ball unlike the surprise bounce of clay and grass courts.

Indoor court surfaces

Indoor court surfaces are made out of various materials such as artificial turf, hard rubber etc.

Carpet is the most common material used.

This type of tennis court surface is hardly used in professional tournaments.

How it affects player's game?

It presents a fast surface with low-bouncing balls.
