SCANNER – electronic device that scans printed or handwritten text, documents, images or certain objects and converts them into a digital file format. Once an object is being scanned, it can be displayed on the screen, stored in the storage medium, printed, faxed, attached as an e-mail message, included in another document and posted on a web site or photo community for everyone to see.

TYPES OF SCANNERS   1. FLATBED SCANNER – to scan single sheets of paper & pages from a book. Work similar to a photocopier machine except that it creates a file of a document in a memory instead of producing a paper copy. Sometimes called reflective scanner.

2. HAND-HELD SCANNER – usually has a scanning width of approximately 4 inches and is useful for copying small images such as signature logos and small photograph. Ex. Barcode scanner – used in shopping stores to evaluate goods.

4. DRUM SCANNER – used mainly for capturing a picture and producing at a very high resolution rate. It uses photomultiplier tube (PMT) to scan images instead of charge-coupled device.

5. PORTABLE SCANNER – design to capture text and other data while you are on the go. - powered by batteries - can easily carry around - great help when it comes to text document scanning.
