Copyright and Fair Use

What is Copyright? The right to reproduce or authorize others to reproduce. It protects certain kinds of “original works of authorship” published or unpublished. Topics include literary, musical, dramatic, choreographed, pictorial, motion, sound.

When can copyright be flexible? When material is in the public domain. When author has granted permission. When there is a legal exception. When it is covered under fair use.

What is fair use? Fair use allows portions of a copyrighted work to be used without the author’s permission for specific purposes. The specific purposes include “criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, or research.

When can fair use occur? The purpose must be clear. The nature of the work. The amount of the work. The effect of the marketability.

Plagiarism Defined To steal or pass off as one’s own To use without crediting the source To commit literary theft To present as new and original an idea or product derived form an existing source

Ways NOT to Plagiarize Cite everything! Acknowledge that material is borrowed Provide audience with a source to gain more knowledge.

Safety Precautions Many internet providers have parental control options to block certain material from the internet. Some providers have a program that can monitor what kids or any users are doing online.

Be SAFE Many sites have cookies or tracking devices. These make it possible to track certain information about users such as name, address, emails, and shopping preferences. Know where you are at online!
