What is Anthropology?
Anthropology The study of humans, past and present , in their cultural, biological, and environmental contexts.
Anthropology Main Question Asked: - How have humans evolved biologically and culturally over time?
4 Sub-Fields: Cultural Anthropology – explores human societies and cultures, emphasizing the study of social structures, beliefs, customs, and practices
4 Sub-Fields: Archaeology – studies human societies through the analysis of material remains, such as artifacts, architecture, and environmental data.
4 Sub-Fields: Biological (Physical) Anthropology – explores human variation, genetics, growth, development, and adaptation.

Methods used in Anthropology
Participant observation - Understanding culture from the perspective of the people being studied.
Ethnography - A kind of fieldwork that extends for a period of time to conduct research within the community they are studying, often involving participant observation and interviews.
Excavation - The systematic process of uncovering and recovering artifacts, structures, and other remains from the ground or other contexts where they are buried or hidden.
Linguistic Analysis - Refers to the systematic examination and study of language. It is used to understand the structure, meaning, usage, and evolution of languages.
Proponents in Anthropology
Franz Boas (1858-1942) - Known as the “Father of American anthropology“, Boas emphasized cultural relativism and conducted pioneering research in ethnography, linguistics, and physical anthropology.
Bronisław Malinowski (1884-1942) - Known for his ethnographic fieldwork in Melanesia. He pioneered participant observation as a method.
Margaret Mead (1901-1978) - An influential cultural anthropologist, she explored how gender roles and cultural norms shape behavior.
