W HAT IS A TRIBE? Hunter gatherer Stratified civilization Tribes have rich and unique cultural traditions, including their own language, music, stories and paintings. They also have their own Gods and Goddesses. 01 03 02 What is a tribe? What are their customs? Classification of tribes a group of people who have the same language and customs and they have a leader (a chief).

A tribe is a group of people who live and work together in a shared geographical area. A tribe has a common culture, dialect, and religion. They also have a strong sense of unity. The tribe is usually headed by a chief. A tribal society is a group of tribes organized around kinships. Various types of tribal society are mentioned below. Contemporary historians and travelers give very little information about the tribes. Except for a few exceptions, tribal people have not kept written records. Yet rich rituals and oral traditions have been preserved. They were passed down to each new generation. Present-day historians have begun to use such oral traditions to write tribal histories. Tribal people have been found in almost every region of the subcontinent. The area and influence of the tribe varied at different times. Some powerful tribes were in control of large territories. Their people were loyal subjects of the dynasty of Madurai, according to tribal legend. When the dynasty was deposed, the surviving royal members migrated to Travancore, central Kerala. On their way to Kerala, they carried the idols of Madurai Meenakshi, the deity of the royal family, on their backs.

MUTHUVAN TRIBE The Muthuvan people live on the border hill forests of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. They speak slightly two different dialects and call each other Malayalam Muthuvan and Pandi Muthuvan. Muthuvan are animists and spirit worshippers and also worship the forest gods, They believe that the spirits of their ancestors are to be the first migrants to the hill forests.

MUTHUVAN TRIBE The Muthuvan tribe has a unique system of governance called the ' Kani System'. Under this system, each village is headed by a ' Kani ', who is responsible for the administration of the village. They have expertise in traditional medicines which are very effective and these medicines and the medicine men are confidentially preserved and passed on to the generations. Occupation: Agriculture is the main occupation of these Muthuvan tribes, producing quite a number of products like ragi, cardamom and lemon grass.

Language Dialect: The language that Muthuvans use as their medium of communication does not have a script. It is closely linked to Tamil and Malayalam. Almost all can follow Malayalam. In the schools, the medium of instruction is Malayalam. Therefore the younger generation usually uses Malayalam more.

Entertainmentfor the tribe The major source of entertainment is movies. Most of them have own TV in their houses.

Agricultural practices Agriculture and Food Habits: Most of the Muthuvans have their own land. The state government has given them the land for agricultural purposes but without a deed certificate. The main agricultural crops grown by Muthuvans are tapioca, pepper, cardamom. Muthuvans rear cattle, goat.

Agricultural practices Their food timings vary depending on their work. Their daily menu include rice, curries,tapioca , fish etc. women collect green leaves, wild vegetables, mushroom and other tubers from forest. They also collect ‘ rudraksha’and ‘ thelli ’ from the forest and sell it. The Muthuvan women are hard working; they work in the field during the day time along with the men. Once, they are back in the evening from the field they cook the food. Some of them collect crab and fish fromthe streams.

OUTFIT Mens: Men wear shirt and long dhotis. The old men use a thalappavu , a cloth knot that cover the whole head. Old men wear earrings ( kadukkan ) with stones and glass. Womens: Women wore saree. The chains on neck, rings for the ears, fingers and toes, and many glass bangles on the arms, nosestud and an anklet on each leg are the usual ornaments of women. They also have practices like tattooing.
