DISCOVERY OF CELLS Robert Hooke was the first scientist who observed cells with the help of a simple microscope in 1665. He observed thin slices of cork through the microscope, he happened to see honey comb like structures . He called these structures “cellulae” which means “Small Chambers”. They were dead cells. The word “cell” originated from “cellulae”. Study of cells is known as Cell Biology .
History Of Cells In 1688 Anton Van Leeuwenhoek first discovered the living cells. For this he developed 2 microscope which could magnify objects 300 times. M J Schleiden discovered that the body of plants is made of cells. Theodore Schwann discovered that the body of animals is also made of cells. New cells can be originated only from pre existing ones was found out by Virchow .
CELL THEORY Formulated by M J Schleiden and Theodore Schwann summarizing the findings of various scientists. It puts forward two main concepts. The body of all organisms is made up of cells. Cells are the structural and functional unit of life ( organisms).
