THE CELL MEMBRANE Prepared by: Ms. Wenalyn F. Morante , LPT SHS-TII
Cell membrane is composed of: 1. PHOSPHOLIPID BILAYER
The cellular membrane is often described as a fluid mosaic. It is fluid because the phospholipids form a fluid rather than a solid structure. It is mosaic because of the arrangement of many proteins within the sheets of phospholipids.
All cell membranes are formed of phospholipid molecules. The phosphate end of each molecule carries an electric charge; it dissolves in water. The fatty acid tails of each molecule are neutral in charge and do not dissolve in water.
Cell membrane is composed of: 2. CHOLESTEROL
Cholesterol molecules stabilize the plasma membrane of an animal cell.
When cholesterol are inserted between two phospholipids, cholesterol holds fatty acids in place, restricting their movements.
