Common Diseases Spread by Cockroaches and their prevention
Cockroaches, often considered to be one of the most common pests, pose an imminent danger
that goes beyond their hideous appearance. In Dubai and other parts of UAE, where warmth and
humidity serve as an ideal habitat for these insects, their presence is a significant health concern.
This blog investigates common diseases spread by cockroaches in Dubai. It also sheds light on
the core need for effective pest control strategies.
1. Species of cockroaches in Dubai, UAE: We all know that cockroaches burgeon in Dubai’s
subtropical climate. The most common species that are encountered here include the
German cockroach (Blattella germanica), American cockroach (Periplaneta americana),
and Oriental cockroach (Blatta orientalis). These cockroaches are quick to multiply and
reproduce. They are also great at adapting to the environment which makes them a very
resilient and formidable pest.
2. Vector for Diseases: Cockroaches transmit various pathogens, acting as carrier for many
diseases. They mainly transmit bacteria, viruses, and parasites via their faecal matter,
saliva, or exoskeleton. Cockroaches look for food in unclean environments and then
contaminate kitchen surfaces and exposed food items with these.
3. Diseases Spread by Cockroaches:
a. Salmonellosis: Cockroaches carry salmonella. This bacterium causes
salmonellosis if ingested via food or water that has been previously contaminated by
cockroaches. Symptoms may include diarrhoea, abdominal cramps, and fever.
b. Dysentery, Food poisoning: Besides salmonella, the other bacteria that these
cockroaches are known to carry goes by the name Shigella. Shigella bacteria in cockroach
feces leads to dysentery, which means you may end up with severe diarrhoea
accompanied with blood or mucus in it.
c. Gastroenteritis: Cockroaches are also known to carry and communicate
pathogens, namely, Escherichia Coli and Campylobacter Jejuni. These pathogens lead to
gastroenteritis in humans. Symptoms of gastroenteritis includes fever, vomiting, and
diarrhoea.
d. Allergies and Asthma: Allergens from cockroach’s saliva, faeces, or
exoskeleton, worsens respiratory problems like asthma. Other symptoms include
wheezing, sneezing, coughing, and stuff nose.
e. Dermatitis: Cockroach infestations have also known to cause skin problems, like
dermatitis. Symptoms include constant itching and inflammation.
Below are details of what steps that can be taken to prevent spread of diseases by cockroaches.
1. Keeping surroundings clean:
Practicing good sanitization habits goes a long way. Make sure your home is
clean. Clear out food bits and crumbs lying here and there and any pack up
and store away any food leftovers as soon as done eating. Seal all entry and
exit points so that easy access to your home and offices is not available to
these pests. Last but not the least, manage debris and waste products in a way
as to not leave them exposed. Get waste bins that are covered. Duly dispose
off garbage in sealed packets outside your homes where they can be collected
promptly by the municipality.
2. Moisture Control:
Make sure there are no leaky pipes or faucets on your property. This should be done
to reduce humidity levels so that to deter cockroaches from entering your spaces.
Dehumidifiers may also be used for areas like basements and bathrooms if there is
need for it.
3. Pest Monitoring and Management:
It is a good idea to regularly examine your home for signs of
cockroaches. Check for their droppings, egg cases, or dead cockroaches
whenever you have time.
Use DIY techniques such as use of baits, traps, and insect growth
regulators, to control cockroach populations.
If you feel the problem has gone out of hand, do contact a professional
pest control service provider without delay.
4. Education and Awareness:
It is a good idea to educate residents, employees, and building occupants about the
importance of proper sanitation and hygiene practices in preventing cockroach
infestations.
Training can also be provided to building staff to identify cockroach harbourage
areas. They can then implement preventive measures in both residential as well as
commercial settings.
5. Collaboration and Regulation:
Foster collaboration between property owners, tenants, pest
management professionals, and public health authorities to address
cockroach infestations comprehensively.
Enforce regulations and building codes related to sanitation, waste
management, and pest control to ensure compliance and minimize the
risk of cockroach-borne diseases.
6. Regular Inspections and Maintenance:
Conduct routine inspections of buildings and facilities to detect and
address conditions conducive to cockroach infestations promptly.
Implement proactive maintenance measures, such as repairing cracks in
walls and floors, to prevent cockroaches from establishing breeding
sites.
Cockroaches are silent carriers of so many diseases that an action plan is needed to get rid of
these pests for good. By understanding how to prevent entry and spread of these insects, a lot
can be achieved as far as public safety and health is concerned. Each of us should take steps to
ensure our surroundings are clean in order to stop cockroaches to make our home their home.
