Diversity of plants By Fariha

PLANT diversity The Presence of variety of plants in the form of different taxas ( species, genera) is called plant diversity. Plants have different morphology, cytology anatomy. This makes plants diversity. It included classifications and nomenclature

Scope of classification of plants Study of organisms and evolutionary relationships between them is taxonomy or systematics. Tells us about relations between them Tells us about new species Animals can be arranged into groups by knowing the relation.

Taxonomy hierarchy Based on morphology Carolus Linnaeus gave classification system. Different species can be grouped together on the basis of similarities Group of animal with similar characters, form a taxon Cassia fistula and cassia senna have same compound leaves so have same taxon. C. L recognized 5 taxas . 3 added later. Domain, kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species. Based on Evolution ; C.L Grouped accept Evolution but a Grouped plants on their evolutionary relationships. Members of same taxon are closely related to each other than different taxon.

kingdoms of life R.H. Whittaker proposed the five-kingdom classification in 1969. This classification was based upon certain characters like mode of nutrition, cell structure, This form of kingdom classification includes five kingdoms Monera, Protista, Fungi, Plantae and Animalia.

Kingdom Monera All prokaryotes. Contain bacteria and cyanobacteria. Kingdom Protista All eukaryotes. Single celled, or colonies, e.g , amoeba , paramecium

Kingdom Fungi Eukaroytes , multicellular, non motile, have cell wall, Mode of nutrition distinguish fungi from plants. Fungi is decomposer digest organic matter and obsorb broken products. Kingdom Plantae Eukaroytes , multicellular, photosynthesis. Cell wall, non motile.

Kingdom Animalia Eukarytoes , multicellular, motile, depends on others for food, no cell walls.

Domain classification system On the basis of ribosomal RNA. All organism have same ancestor 3 MAJOR evolutionary lineages, called domains. Domain is placed above the kingdom. 1. Archaea: prokaryotes. In extreme environments. Hot waters, high salt, high acidic environment. Gave rise to next 2 domains. 2. Eubacteria; True bacteria, prokaryotes. 3. Eukarya; diverge more recently from archaea than eubacteria. All eukaryotes. Contain 4 kingdoms , plantae, fungi, animalia and protozoa.

Viruses; not considered as organisms 1. on borderline of living and non living 2. they have crystalline nature- so non living 3. they are a cellular- show characters of livings 4. they have RNA or DNA encased in protein coat. 5. reproduce in living cells. And harm them Not counted in 5 kingdom classification system due to these reasons.
