ADVERTISING Advertising is a paid form of communication used by businesses, organizations, or individuals to promote products, services, ideas, or brands to a target audience. Its main purpose is to inform, persuade, and remind people in order to influence their buying decisions or attitudes.
TYPES OF ADVERTISING 1. Print Advertising: Done through newspapers, magazines, brochures, pamphlets, etc. Example: Newspaper ad for a coaching institute. 2. Broadcast Advertising: Includes television and radio ads. Example: TV commercial of a new mobile phone. 3. Outdoor Advertising: Uses physical spaces in public areas. Example: Billboards, posters, hoardings, wall paintings, transit ads (buses, trains, autos).
4. Digital / Online Advertising: Done through the internet on websites, search engines, and social media. Example: Social media ads (Instagram, Facebook, YouTube)Google search adsBanner ads on websites 5. Mobile Advertising: Ads shown on mobile apps, SMS, or push notifications. Example: Pop-up offers in a shopping app. 6. Native Advertising: Ads that blend with the platform’s content, looking less like ads. Example: Sponsored articles on news websites.
7. Covert / Surrogate AdvertisingCovert : Product shown in movies/TV shows without direct promotion (e.g., hero using a brand of phone). Example: Promoting restricted products indirectly (e.g., soda ads for alcohol brands). 8. Public Service Advertising (PSA): Aimed at spreading awareness and educating people. Example: Ads about polio vaccination, road safety, or “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.”
ROLES OF COMMUNICATION IN MARKETING 1. Creating Awareness : Makes the target market aware of a product, brand, or service. Example: Launch ads for a new shampoo. 2. Generating Interest & Desire : Attracts attention and creates demand for the product. Example: Ads showing benefits of a healthy drink. 3. Supporting Sales Promotion : Complements discounts, offers, and contests. Example: “Buy 1 Get 1 Free” promoted in ads.
4. Building Brand Identity & Loyalty: Helps in positioning the brand in customers’ minds. Example: Nike’s “Just Do It” slogan builds long-term image. 5. Differentiating Products : Shows how one product is better than competitors. Example: Comparative ads (Colgate vs. other toothpaste).
6. Reminding Customers : Keeps existing customers engaged and loyal. Example : Cadbury ads remind people to gift it during festivals. 7. Educating Customers: Provides information about features, usage, price, and benefits. Example: Ads explaining how online payment apps work.
