How many dogs can participate at a given time? double Is staying beyond 8 weeks of training allowed? What is the structure and living condition like for the dogs at WSP? Who is the trainer? Ideas For Structures, cont. BMHS training program Create different obedience training tiers for all shelter dog (the ones that don’t go to WSP): basic commands and BMHS version of canine good citizen. All shelter dogs, once cleared medically, should go through Tier 1 basic obedience program: Sit, Down, Touch (come when call), Leave it, Polite leash walking? Tier 2 obedience program can mirror AKC CGC skills? Accept a friendly stranger Siting politely for petting How does the dog respond to being groomed and examined? Walking on a loose leash Can the dog walk pass distraction (in a crowd) Sit, down, stay Coming when called (touch commands) Reaction toward another dog
Ideas For Structures, cont. BMHS training program, cont. Define standards on how to determine that a dog pass his/her training and consistently demonstrate ability to consistently follow commands Ideas on this with BMHS staffs and volunteers: Checklist on kennel door? Formal skill demonstration? Provide passing certificates. Difference in adoption price for dogs who have earned their training? Awareness in the local community: offer continual training and support beyond adoption If a dog is currently enrolled in Tier 1 or 2 training, BMHS can offer new owner continuation of training? (includes in adoption price model with different price level depends on level of training?) Separate training program for community like PetSmart with competitive pricing model
Ideas For Structures, cont. BMHS training program, cont. How to implement training lessons and incorporate these with our volunteers? How to make it simple and sustainable: clear instruction and expectation? motivate the volunteers? only involve seasoned volunteers? Additional signs on kennel door with: current training status? list of commands that the dog needs to check off that week? 2 commands per walk or how many is a reasonable achievement both for walker / dog? Organize dog-training workshops for volunteers, bring in a dog trainer? (next bullet point) How do we implement continual training for the dogs who complete WSP training program?
Ideas For Structures, cont. BMHS training program, cont. Logistics on how to jumpstart? Partnership with local established dog trainer, what kind of working partnership can BMHS offer them? How many do we want to partner with? If more than 1, how do we create a training schedule? How do we envision the structure of this partnership? Long term goal: BMHS dog trainer? How do we fund this in its infancy, and how can this program fund itself and bring revenue to BMHS in the future? On-campus training area? Indoor vs Outdoor based on seasons and classes? Group training (involve volunteers?) and individual session? Sentiment of staffs and volunteers on this? Realistic timeline to achieve this goal? What do we want to tackle first?
Ideas For Structures, cont. BMHS training program, non categorized thoughts Additional training through local trainers: Up to snuff mutt has group walking (2 nd option to play group) which will need volunteer How to increase volunteer base in the community? Students? Retirees? Marketing strategies to increase awareness?
