PS&EMU directorate/RDSO VARIOUS POWER SUPPLY SYSTEMS ➢ Self generating system(SG) ➢ End on generations(EOG) ➢ Head on generations(HOG)

DEVELOPMENT OF SELF GENERATION SYSTEM (SG) The self generation system is invented by “centre for railway information systems (CRIS)” of the indian railways, ministry of railways, government of india. It is located in “chanakyapuri, new delhi.” CRIS was establish by indian railway in “1986 July” The self generating system is invented key people of ashvini vaishanaw [Minister of railways], V.K.Tripathi[chair person and chief executive officer].

MERITS OF SELF GENERATING SYSTEMS Independent of the iron formation Independent of mode of traction No additional source of power is required It can be designed to specific need of the coach The most of the commen types of train , run’s at an average speed of 50.6 km/h

DEMERITS OF SG SYSTEM Limited capacity of generation, at present 2 x 25 KW per coach Power is not generated during standing/slow speed, hence bulky batteries are required High maintenance requirements and poor reliability Very poor efficiency (58% only)

END ON GENERATION SYSTEM The self generation system is invented by “centre for railway information systems (CRIS)” of the indian railways, ministry of railways, government of india. It is located in “chanakyapuri, new delhi.” CRIS was establish by indian railway in “2008 Feb” The end on generation system is invented by “Ajay kumer nigam”[loco pilot present] and “Sathish shrivastar”[senior assistant, loco pilot]

MERITS OF END ON GENERATION (EOG) SYSTEM High capacity of power source is available, at present 2 x 336 KW No need of bulky batteries Low maintenance requirement and high reliability as stand by DA set is available Independent of traction system Power transmission at 750V with reduced transmission loss. Reduced dead weight as compared to SG system A train which consists of length 650 meters The most of the commen types of train , run’s at an average speed of 75 km/h

DEMERITS OF EOG SYSTEM Higher cost of energy due to high fuel cost Noise/ Smoke pollution and non environment friendly Loss in passenger earning capacity due to presence of two power cars with on-board DA sets at both ends Can feed load upto 21 coaches only with existing DA set Requires intensive maintenance of DA sets

HEAD ON GENERATION SYSTEM The self generation system is invented by “centre for railway information systems (CRIS)” of the indian railways, ministry of railways, government of india. It is located in new delhi.” CRIS was establish by indian railway in “2011 SEPT” The system run’s the trains hotel load [the load of air conditioning lights, fans, and pantry etc] by drawing electricity from the over head electric lines through the pantograpy.

MERITS OF HOG SYSTEM Input supply to hotel load converter is single phase 750 V AC from the transformer of locomotive This would cause the trains to become more cost-efficient and less polution. Globally, HOG is an established system of power supply arrangement in trains Pollution free and cheaper power from OHE as compared to EOG system and SG system Highest reliability as compared to SG and EOG system due to reduced number of generating equipment No irritating noise or smoke Low maintenance requirement Reduced dead weight as compared to SG

Suitable for diesel as well as electric traction Elimination of under-slung equipment like alternator & battery thereby enhanced safety HOG type AC coaches shall be interchangeable with EOG type trains Charging of battery from alternator requires at least 24 km/h (cut-in) train speed. Operation of SGAC coach is thus difficult in slow moving The trains chaging of battery from alternator requires at least 24km/h High efficincy (93%) and low running of the train.
