Sigma factors are multi-domain subunits of bacterial RNA polymerase (RNAP) that play critical roles in transcription initiation, including the recognition and opening of promoters as well as the initial steps in RNA synthesis. C ore enzyme consists of four subunits (α 2 ββ ') contains the polymerase catalytic function. The interaction between this core enzyme and a σ factor results in an RNA polymerase holoenzyme that can detect specific promoter sequences and activate transcription
