It has been reported that Dr. Zakir Naik has been granted permanent
residency status in Malaysia, despite facing money laundering
charges back in 2016. Additionally, Peace TV has been banned in
India and other countries. Naik's mission is to steer the younger
generation toward their faith, although some may view it as being
outdated.
Early life and education
Dr. Zakir Naik was born on October 18th, 1965 in India to his
parents Abdul Karim and Roshan Naik. He attended Kishinchand
Chellaram College for further education and pursued a degree in
medicine at the Topical National Medical College and B.Y.L Nair
Charitable Hospital. Eventually, he earned his MBBS degree from
the University of Mumbai.
Career
In 1991, he began his career by establishing an Islamic
international school in Mumbai. He is also the founder of United
Islamic Aid, with his wife Farhat Naik serving as the president of
the women's section of the Islamic Research Foundation. Their
goal is to provide scholarships to underprivileged Muslim youth.
Naik was inspired by Ahmad Deedat's spiritual teachings, and
after meeting him in 1987, he earned the title "Deedat plus". In
2006, he founded Peace TV, the world's largest religious network.
Recently, in March 2021, Naik launched "Al Hidaayah", which
features videos of more than forty famous Islamic scholars,
including Bilal Philips and Ahmad Deedat.
Lectures and speeches
Dr. Zakir Naik is known for delivering Islamic
messages in a conversational tone. He has participated in over
4000 debates covering topics such as "Islam and Modern
Science," "Islam and Secularism," and "Islam in Comparison to
Other Religions." In 1994, Naik engaged in a four-hour debate
regarding writer Taslima Nasreen's views on Islam. One of Naik's
most notable speeches was with William Cambell in Chicago in
April 2000, discussing "The Qur'an and the Bible: In the Light of
Science." In January 2006, Naik held dialogues with Ravi
Shankar in Bangalore on the topic of God in Islam and Hinduism.
Debates and tours
University of Melbourne
Naik was invited by the Islamic Information and Services Network
of Australasia to speak on the concept of true equality of women
in Islam. However, during the debate, Sushi Das of The Age
accused Naik of spreading prejudices through his promotion of
Islam's moral values over those of other religions.
St David’s Hall
In August 2006, Naik had planned to speak at St
David's Hall, but it was canceled by MP David Davies, who
believed Naik was a bigot and not deserving of a public platform.
However, Naik was defended by the public in Cardiff who
recognized the importance of Islam and appreciated Naik's
argumentative approach to religious concepts.
Visit to Gambia
President Yahya Jammeh of Gambia invited Naik
to speak on the 20th Gambian Revolution's day in 2014. Naik
presented four lectures at the Pancha Mi Hall of Paradise Suites
Hotel and the University of Gambia, covering topics such as
"Terrorism and Jihad" from an Islamic perspective, "Religion in
the Right Perspective," and "Misconceptions about Islam."
Additionally, Naik met with the Gambia Supreme Islamic Council
and held a meeting with Gambian Imams.
Malaysia
In 2012, Dr. Zakir Naik gave various lectures
in the presence of the former Prime Minister of Malaysia, Mahathir
Mohamad, and other notable individuals. Despite opposition from
HINDRAF members, Naik persisted with his work. In August
2019, Naik spoke about Islamophobia in Kota Bharu, Kelantan,
and more than 100,000 people attended the session.
Issues Covered by Naik
During his talk, Naik addressed various social
issues such as the prohibition of alcohol and music. He also
expressed the belief that, according to the Qur'an and Sunnah,
homosexuals should be punished with death. Naik further pointed
out that European societies have been negatively affected by the
prevalence of pornography, which has become a habit for many
due to television and other societal factors.
Naik believed that the media was an important
tool in spreading goodness and fighting against evil. He opposed
the European media strategy of portraying Islam as a negative
force by showcasing Muslims as fundamentalists. Naik was
convinced that the Western media had actively sought to defame
Islam, using various audio and video aids.
Naik renamed ISIS as AISIS(Anti-Islamic State
of Iraq and Syria) because such organizations were established
against teachings of Islam for the purpose of killing thousands of
innocent citizens.
In 2016, Naik commended Narendra Modi for
his efforts to promote harmony between Muslim-majority countries
and other nations during his visits. However, in 2019, Modi made
false accusations against Naik in an attempt to damage his
reputation. Naik defended himself by calling Modi a liar and
stating that he posed a significant threat to the security of
Muslims. Naik has faced numerous challenges in Malaysia due to
controversial dialogues that were misunderstood by the
government.
