OUTLINING

WHAT IS OUTLINING? A map of your essay or a blueprint. It helps organize our ideas, visualize our paper's potential structure, and to further flesh out and develop points. It creates a linear, organized plan for your paper that shows the main ideas that you will discuss.

PARTS OF AN OUTLINE: A. Introduction (attention grabber) B. Body (The content of the paper) C. Conclusion (Wrap all of your arguments)

OUTLINING Thesis Statement: All outlines should begin with a thesis statement of summarizing sentence. Main points (also known as main idea): Chief point an author is making about a topic.

Sub-Points (also known as supporting details or idea): A paragraph contains facts, statements, examples-specifics which guide us to a full understanding of the main idea. OUTLINING

Guidelines in Writing an Outline

GUIDELINES IN WRITING AN OUTLINE: Place the title at the center above the outline. Every level of the outline must have at least two items (I and II, A and B, 1 and 2). Put a period after each numeral and letter. Indent each new level of the outline. All items of one kind (roman numerals, capital letters, Arabic numerals) should line up with each other.

GUIDELINES IN WRITING AN OUTLINE: Capitalize the first letter of each item. The terms Introduction, Body, and Conclusion do not have to be included in the outline. They are not topics; they are merely organizational units in the writer’s mind.

BASIC OUTLINE FORM I. MAIN IDEA A. Subsidiary idea or supporting idea to I B. Subsidiary idea or supporting idea to I 1. Subsidiary idea to B 2. Subsidiary idea to B a. Subsidiary idea to 2 b. TYPES OF OUTLINES ACCORDING TO STRUCTURE

1. SENTENCE OUTLINE An outline that is done in full sentence.

1. SENTENCE OUTLINE

An outline that consists of a short phrase. 2. TOPIC OUTLINE

Several aspects must be considered in writing a topic outline. 1. Recall that all headings and subheadings must be words or phrases, not sentences. 2. Also, the wording within each division must be parallel. 3. Finally, as in any outline, remember that a division or subdivision cannot be divided into one part; therefore, if there is an "A" there must be a "B," and if there is a "1" there must be a "2." 2. TOPIC OUTLINE

Suffering takes place when we patiently endure unpleasantness, discomfort, and pain. It can come in the form of physical suffering, when we experience physical sensations such as discomfort, hunger, distress, and pain. These are often caused by injury, disease, and the lack of basic needs. It can be in the form of mental suffering, which involves emotional and mental states such as depression, anxiety, fear, loneliness and grief. These may be caused by unexpected situations in life such as sudden changes in lifestyle, loss of employment, stressful situation, and grief cause by the death of a loved one. The tension between what a person is and what he wants to be may also an experience of suffering.

Thesis Statement: ____________________________________ I. Suffering A. Cause of Suffering 1.________________________________________ 2. ________________________________________ 3. ________________________________________ B. Forms of Suffering 1._________________________________________ 2._________________________________________ II. (Conclusion) _______________________________________
