SENDIMENTARY
ROCKS
By: Ms.Zapanta
Ms. Regor

Questions for today:
1. What are sedimentary rocks?
2. Name the three main types of sedimentary rocks.
3. What is a clastic sedimentary rock? Give an
example.
4. How are chemical sedimentary rocks formed?
Provide an example.
5. What are organic sedimentary rocks? Can you
describe one and provide an example?

What is sendimentary rocks?
-Sedimentary Rocks are formed by
the accumulation of sediments.
•Sediments are solid fragments of
Organic or Inorganic materials from
weathered and eroded pre-existing
rocks and living matters.

The most important
geological processes that
lead to the creation of
sedimentary rocks are
erosion, weathering,
dissolution, precipitation,
deposition, lithification, and
(compaction and
cementation)

Erosion and Weathering: These processes
break down larger rocks into smaller ones,
creating the raw materials for new sedimentary
rocks.
Dissolution: This is a form of chemical
weathering where slightly acidic water slowly
wears away stone.

Precipitation: This is the formation of rocks
and minerals from chemicals that precipitate
from water. For example, as a lake dries up
over many thousands of years, it leaves
behind mineral deposits.
Lithification: This is the process by which
clay, sand, and other sediments on the
bottom of the ocean or other bodies of water
are slowly compacted into rocks from the
weight

The Importance Of Sedimentary Rocks
•Sedimentary rocks contain important information about
the history of the earth.
•They contain fossil, they preserved remains of ancient
plants and animals.
•They composition of sediments provide us with clues as
to the original rock.

THE 3 TYPES OF
SEDIMENTARY
ROCKS

Clastic Sedimentary Rocks
This type of rock is formed when rock layers
are formed due to the mechanical
weathering of different rock types.
1.Clastic

Examples:
Conglomerate Sandstone Shale

2.Chemical
Chemical Sedimentary Rocks
This type of rock is created when minerals that are
present in rock forms undergo a chemical reaction that
causes them to cool as precipitates over time before
changing back to rock form.

Examples:
Limestone Halite

3.Organic
Organic Sedimentary Rocks
This rock type mainly comprises coal and
limestones, which are formed due to the
accumulation and deposition of dead plants and
animals in rock layers.

Examples:
Coal Chalk
