EARTH SCIENCE

EARTH SCIENCE

EARTH SCIENCE Earth Science is the study of the Earth and its neighbors in space. locate and develop energy and mineral resources impact of human activity on Earth's environment methods to protect the planet knowledge about Earth processes

FOUR EARTH SCIENCE Geology: Science of the Earth Meteorology: Science of the Atmosphere Oceanography: Science of the Oceans Astronomy: Science of the Universe

FOUR EARTH SCIENCE GEOLOGY: SCIENCE OF THE EARTH Geology deals with the composition of Earth materials, Earth structures, and Earth processes.

FOUR EARTH SCIENCE METEOROLOGY: SCIENCE OF THE ATMOSPHERE Meteorology is the study of the atmosphere and how processes in the atmosphere determine Earth's weather and climate. Meteorology is a very practical science

FOUR EARTH SCIENCE OCEANOGRAPHY: SCIENCE OF THE OCEANS Oceanography is the study of Earth's oceans - their composition, movement, organisms and processes.

FOUR EARTH SCIENCE ASTRONOMY: SCIENCE OF THE UNIVERSE Astronomy is the study of the universe.

QUESTION Why learn Earth Science?

WHY LEARN Earth Science? Some Earth scientists use their knowledge of the Earth to locate and develop energy and mineral resources, or locate clean water. Others study the impact of human activity on Earth's environment and design methods to protect the planet, such as soil to grow food.

WHY LEARN Earth Science? Some use their knowledge about Earth processes such as volcanoes, earthquakes and hurricanes to plan communities that will not expose people to these natural hazards. Only then can citizens make informed judgments that affect our planet, protect its surface, care for its atmosphere, safeguard its water and sustain life.

ORIGIN OF THE UNIVERSE Cosmology is a branch of astronomy that studies the origin of the universe and how it has evolved. The universe began 10-15 billion years ago, when an explosion called the Big Bang occurred. The first 3 minutes after, great quantities of hydrogen and helium were created, spanning apart at great speeds. 3 million years later, huge clouds stretching 500 million light years across, began to condense. After about 200 million years , these condensations formed the first galaxies ( the birthplace of the stars and of elements heavier than hydrogen and helium.

ORIGIN OF THE UNIVERSE Creationist theory Oscillating Universe Theory Steady-State Theory Big bang theory

CREATIONIST THEORY This theory states that God, the Supreme Being, created the whole universe out of nothing The proof can be read in the Holy Bible Stipulating that God created the heavens and the earth including man. Etiological (study of origination) Assume spiritual world.

CREATIONIST THEORY

BIG BANG THEORY

BIG BANG THEORY All of the energy and matter of the universe were compressed into a hot and dense state. Temperature decreased sufficiently allow clumps of matter to collect. Our Solar system were formed 5 billion years later. In 1930, the American astronomer Edwin P. Hubble showed that the universe is expanding.

BIG BANG THEORY What if the Big Bang is the end of the previous universe?

BIG BANG THEORY What if the Big Bang is the end of the previous universe? CYCLIC MODEL OF THE UNIVERSE

OSCILLATING UNIVERSE THEORY Was proposed by Russian-born US cosmologist George Gamow who helped explain the Big Bang Theory. The expansion of the universe will eventually come to a halt then collapses up to the time that the universe will return to its original form and another Big Bang will occur.

STEADY-STATE THEORY

STEADY-STATE THEORY Does steady-state theory agrees with the statement, “The Universe is Expanding?”

STEADY-STATE THEORY Does steady-state theory agrees with the statement, “The Universe is Expanding?”

STEADY-STATE THEORY States that the universe has always been the same since the beginning and will remain in its present state until eternity. Claims that new galaxies appear as a result of the drifting apart of other galaxies

What is the most accepted theory by the scientific community?

Cosmologist that support this theory claim that our universe is 13.7 billion years old and they divided the history of the universe into a series of eras or time periods.

Planck Era (All four known forces are unified.) GUT (Grand Unified Theory) Era (Gravity "freezes out" and becomes distinct.) Electroweak Era (The nuclear strong force "freezes out" and becomes distinct.) Particle Era (particles begin to form) Era of Nucleosynthesis (nuclear fusion creates Helium, and tiny amount of heavier elements) Era of Nuclei (electrons are not yet bound to nuclei) Era of Atoms (electrons recombine to form neutral atoms, and the first stars are born) Era of Galaxies (Galaxies begin to form, leading up to the present)
