Earthing And Types of Earthing

What is Earthing : When there is a fault in the machine or any electrical system, with the help of the earth, the surge current goes to the ground; thus, with the help of the earth, we and Machine get protection . Example : Anyone is a motor. Understand that we have not earthed it and there is an electrical fault in this motor. Will pass through the body and suppose this time someone touches the body even by mistake then he feels terrible grief. But if we had earthed the body properly, this current would have easily gone into the ground with the help of earthing wire.

How Earthing Is Done: Earthing is a very simple task involving the body of a motor or any equipment attached to the ground. Understand By Example: We know that the body of a motor is made of a substance like iron or steel. To do earthing , we attach this body to the ground. If a fault condition touches the body of the motor, then the current will go to the ground with the help of this earthing wire instead of going through the body.

Different Types of Earthing

Strip and Wire earthing : Strip and Wire earthing This earthing is done in a place where the ground is rocky, which means there is more rock in the ground. This earthing is widely used in long-distance transmission lines.

Rod Earthing : In this method of earthing , a copper rod with a galvanized steel pipe is placed vertically into the ground manually or with a hammer to the desired value; the lengths of the implanted electrodes reduce the earth's resistance.

Pipe Earthing : This is the most commonly used earthing in which we put a pipe 5 to 10 feet into the ground.

Plate Earthing : Plate Earthing is considered to be the best earthing . This is used in substation and power station. Such earthing is used in places where a large number of current flows.

Coil Earthing : Coil earthing is used in the smallest amount. This earthing uses a coil made of G.I wire. Such earthing is mostly used for electric poles.

Chemical earthing :- Chemical earthing is an earthing in which we use chemical powder instead of salt and coal. In any ordinary earthing , salt and coal are placed on top of the electrode. When the chemical earthing , the chemical powder is placed over the electrode . Two types of powders are used in chemical earthing . One is Carbon powder and the other is Bentonite powder. Carbon powder is black in color while bentonite powder is brown in color. Earthing with carbon powder is used in a normal place while earthing with bentonite powder is used in a dry place

Earthing resistance:- Earthing is used to protect us and our equipment. The lower resistance of the earth is the better . The best earthing is o hms , but this is not possible . Earthing resistance of power plant. 0.5 ohms or less is kept. The earthing resistance of the substation is kept at 2 ohms or less . The earthing of the L.T(low tension poles or tower) pole is kept at 5 ohms or less.
