Economic importance of bacteria Presented by : Khushbu’s Microbiology

Bacteria :microorganisms Bacteria :helpful to the other living organisms Nutrition , health , or any other support without causing any harmful effects . Bacteria : economically important as these microorganisms are used by humans  for many purposes .

Beneficial uses of bacteria Production of traditional foods : Yogurt Cheese vinegar. Agriculture : Compost and fertilizer production . Bacteria : in genetic engineering genetic changes.

Useful bacteria Genetic engineering : production of human insulin  and human growth hormone Biotechnology : Bacteria are important in the production of many dietary supplements and pharmaceuticals . Food processing : Sourdough  bread is made to rise by fermentation, with a leaven that consists of bacteria , often combined with wild yeast Enzymes Image : Recently refreshed sourdough

Useful bacteria Bioremediation : remove  pollutants from contaminated water, soil and subsurface material .   Mega Borg  Oil Spill 100 pounds of bacteria were sprayed over an acre of the oil slick to break down the  hydrocarbons  present into more benign by-products . Image : Alcanivorax borkumensis is capable of degrading oil in seawater

Industry importance of bacteria Fiber industry: Bacteria like : clostridium butyrcum is used in the retting of flax, sunn hemp to extract the clear fiber .   Tea and tobacco: Micrococcus   & Bacillus megatherium  are used in the curing of tea and tobacco .

Industry importance of bacteria Sterilization : This is a process to eradicate microbial contamination from finished products. Few bacteria : biological indicators for sterilization validation . These bacteria are available commercially as strips containing spores.

Medicine (probiotics) Antibiotics : E. coli  : used for produce  D-amino acids such as D-p- hydroxy phenylglycin , an important intermediate for synthesis of the antibiotic amoxicillin. Insulin , Other medicines are obtained from them.   Escherichia coli  : used for commercial preparation of riboflavin and vitamin K.

Agriculture importance Bio-pesticides and fertilizers. Pest control : Bacteria can also be used in the place of pesticides in biological pest control Nitrification : Rhizobium   bacteria, living in root nodules of leguminous plant symbiotically, helps in fixing atmospheric nitrogen . THANKS
