In a gas pipeline, a small amount
of foreign debris can result in a
big problem. So, when an
inspection tool returned from a
pipeline missing some of its
caliper parts, Pacific Gas and
Electric’s Robert de Haas had to
get creative to find a way to
retrieve it.

Nuclear
When maintenance is performed on
a nuclear reactor’s associated rod
drives and limit switches, personnel
typically work on a platform over an
open nuclear fuel pool. Water
shields radiation and keeps fuel
cells cool, and these pools of water
surrounding nuclear reactor cores
are designed to slow down the high
energy particles that occasionally
escape the core. In a nuclear
research environment, the reactor
tank is usually partially covered with
aluminum deck plating to allow
operators and researchers access
to the cavity for experiment loading
and unloading.

Storage tanks are important
assets that aren’t resistant to
aging and need to be maintained
over time to help ensure a longer
service life and a safe
environment. The cleaning and
recoating process is a significant
part of the required maintenance,
and it is time consuming and
resource heavy. Typically,
cleaning and recoating involves a
lot of scaffolding and a lot of man
hours. An OnSpec custom
painting robot is here to change
that by allowing automation and
control from the ground.

Case in point: this OnSpec

inspection crawler, was
redesigned for a specific project
at a nuclear facility operated by a

tunnel.
