METHODS OF RESEARCH IN EDUCATION

Slide Content

TYPES OF RESEARCH

Identify factors which may influence the types of study a researcher may conduct; Introduce the general types of Research; Objectives Today we will learn

Think About... What factors may influence the type of study a researcher may conduct?

The Purpose of the researcher Suitable options for its study Nature of the problem FACTORS IN DECIDING THE TYPE OF RESEARCH TO CONDUCT Availability of resources

To plan an Approach that will best anwser the research question Ensuring the validity and reliability of the study's findings. PURPOSE OF RESEARCH DESIGN

Slide 10 3 Types of Research Historical Research 1 Descriptive Research 2 Experimental Research 3

The systematic collection and evaluation of data related to past occurrences in order to describe causes, effects, and trends of those events that may help explain present events and anticipate future events. Historical Research Primary sources: Secondary sources:

Primary sources: are original documents, an eye witness to the event, with no interpretation coming between the original event and the user of the material. Historical Research

Secondary sources: are report of those who relate what happened as gathered from primary sources. Historical Research

Descriptive study is a fact- finding investigation with adequate interpretation. Data are collected using observation, interview and mail questionnaire. Descriptive Research

Descriptive Research Several types of studies: Assessment study Evaluation Study Content analysis Case study Ethnographic Study Ex post facto Study

The investigator manipulates one or more independent variables and observe variations in the dependent variable(s) influenced by the manipulation of the independent variable(s) Experimental Research

The independent variable is the variable that is manipulated or controlled by the researcher. The dependent variable is the variable that is measured or observed by the researcher. Dependent Variable Independent Variable Example: The effect of a new reading program on grade 6 pupils’ reading comprehension

Control group Experimental group Example: The effect of a new reading program on grade 6 pupils’ reading comprehension

Summary table of the 3 Types of r Research Types of Research FOCUS EXAMPLES METHODS PURPOSE Studying the causes and impacts of of the Philippines Revolution. Documenting behaviors of the students, analyzing the content of social media. Studying the impact of different teaching methods on student performance HISTORICAL RESEARCH DESCRIPTIVE RESEARCH EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH What was? (past) What is? (present) What will be the effect? (future) to reconstruct & interpret past events and contexts analysis of primary and secondary sources, historical documents, interviews surveys, observation, case studies, and content analysis to determine causal relationships by manipulating independent variables and measuring effects on dependent variables controlled experiment, random assignment, manipulation of independent variables, and measurement of dependent variables to provide a detailed account of the current status, practices, conditions, and trends within educational settings.
