CHAPTER 1 THE NATURE OF RESEARCH By: Dr. Jane v. Benigay
DEFINITION OF RESEARCH is derived from the Prefix “Re” which means to repeat and redo and the root word search, which means to find or look for. Research literally means to repeat and looking for which have been in existence before.
It is evident that research is a process , systematic , organized, objective, critical , exhaustive , comprehensive . A research is done for the purpose of solving a problem or adding to the body of knowledge.
Eight (8) characteristics of research 1. Systematic as there are interrelated steps procedure a researcher has to observe in solving problem. 2. Objective – it is not guesswork, this because empirical data have to be gathered by the researcher before making the conclusion or proposing any solution to an identified difficulty problem.
3. Comprehensive is serious about understanding a phenomenon, he has to examine and analyze all its aspects or angels before making a generalization or conclusion. 4. Critical must able to withstand critical scrutiny by another researcher. 5 . Rigorous to be followed in solving a problem should be relevant, appropriate, justified and strictly observed.
6. Valid –whenever the researcher formulates conclusion these are based on the actual findings 7. Verifiable – researcher can check on the correctness of its results by replicating the study based on the methods and procedure employed by the researcher. 8. Empirical – generalization drawn by a researcher is rooted upon hard evidence gathered from the information collected from real life experiences or observations.
Ways of classifying research 1. Academic Research is one conducted by an individual in fulfilling requirements for conferment of degree or academic title. Example: Thesis, Dissertation, Feasibility studies others 2. Research Project is a part of professional work or assignment. Example: Market Research
Methodology of research Descriptive research endeavors to describe systematically, factually, accurately and objectively situation, problem or phenomenon. It seeks to describe “ What is” Correlational/Associational an investigator tries to prove the significance of relationship between two or more factors.
3. Explanatory research is undertaken when the investigator after probing or exploring areas where little is know about the research problem. 4. Experimental research probes into the cause of an effect by exposing one or more experimental groups to one or more treatments or condition. 5. Historical research is an attempt to reconstruct the past objectively and accurately, to explain an incident happened in the past
6. ETHNOGRAPIC RESEARCH is done when researcher is concerned with explaining or describing a phenomenon holistic with the use of multiple data collection.
