WHAT IS POLLUTION ? Pollution is the introduction of harmful materials into the environment which has harmful or poisonous effects.

Water pollution Water pollution is the contamination of water sources by substances which make the water unusable for drinking, cooking, cleaning, swimming, and other activities.

CAUSES OF WATER POLLUTION Industrial Waste Marine Dumping Sewage and Wastewater Oil Leaks and Spills Agriculture Global Warming

Industrial Waste Chemical dumping from the industries is one of the main cause of polluting water.

MARINE DUMPING Marine Pollution refers to trash and pollutants that come from land sources to end up in the ocean.

Sewage and Wastewater Sewage and wastewater contain bacteria, fungi, parasites, and viruses that can cause intestinal, lung, and other infections .

Oil Leaks and Spills The transportation and storage of oil and its derivatives is subject to leakage that pollutes our water resources

Agriculture Pesticides and fertilizers used in agriculture can contaminate both groundwater and surface water.

Global Warming Rising global temperatures caused by CO2 emissions heat the water, reducing its oxygen content.

EFFECTS OF WATER POLLUTION Destruction of biodiversity Contamination of the food chain Lack of potable water Diseases Infant mortality

DESTRUCTION OF BIODIVERSITY Water pollution depletes aquatic ecosystems.

Contamination of the food chain Fishing in polluted waters and the use of waste water for livestock farming and agriculture can introduce toxins into foods which are harmful to our health when eaten.

Lack of potable water The UN says that billions of people around the world have no access to clean water to drink or sanitation, particularly in rural areas.

Disease's The WHO estimates that about 2 billion people have no option but to drink water contaminated by excrement, exposing them to diseases such as cholera, hepatitis A and dysentery.

Infant mortality   Infant mortality is the death of an infant before his or her first birthday. According to the UN,  diarrheal diseases linked to lack of hygiene cause the death of about 1,000 children a day worldwide.

Effect of water pollution on human health  Health risk associated with polluted water includes different diseases such as respiratory disease, cancer, diarrheal disease, neurological disorder and cardiovascular disease s . Nitrogenous chemicals are responsible for cancer and blue baby syndrome. Poor quality water destroys the crop production and infects our food which is hazardous for aquatic life and human life

SHORT VIDEO ON WATER POLLUTION

Preventive measures of water pollution Pick up litter and throw it away in a garbage can. Don't put fertilizer on the grass right before it rains. The chemicals will wash into storm drains and waterways . Skip the use of plastics. Implementing the concept of recycle and reuse. Avoid using of products with chemicals. Reduce the use of pesticides and fertilizers. Proper sewage treatment and management. Practice tree planting. Practice organic farming.
