Electronic Publishing
EP is the dissemination of Information in
electronic format and its distribution to
potential users either on electronic networks
such as internet and Intranet or in stand-alone
formats such as CD-ROMs and Diskette.
Synonym for EP is CAP (Computer Assisted
Publishing)
2DLIS-AMU-ALIGARH

Definition
F.W Lancaster “ EP is as a publication
process where the manuscripts are submitted
in electronic format, edited , printed and even
distributed to readers in electronic form by
employing computers and
telecommunication technology”.
3DLIS-AMU-ALIGARH

Reasons for Developments of E-
Publishing
Rapid development and wide use of
Computer technology
Tremendous growth of computer networks
Merging of Computer and
Telecommunication Technology
Development of Information Industry
4DLIS-AMU-ALIGARH

EP Products
Include text, graphics, audio, video, numeric
and textual databases
Directories, atlases, computer programmes
and
Indexing, Abstracting databases.
5DLIS-AMU-ALIGARH

Categories of E Publishing:
Off line: The information is entirely passes into the
possession of the purchaser/ user who can access it
at an unlimited number of times for no further
change.
Eg. Computer S/W or reference materials on CD.
On line: The information remains in a publisher
controller computer, usually accessible only on
payment of a fee for each use. Unlike the off-line,
the on-line information can be continuously
updated, refined and managed.
6DLIS-AMU-ALIGARH

Advantages of E Publishing
Maintenance of Updated Information
Speed
Global Distribution
Retrieval
Multiple Access
Manageability
7DLIS-AMU-ALIGARH

Disadvantages of E Publishing
High Initial Cost
Incompatible Hardware and Software
Weak Infrastructure of computer and
Communication network
Inconvenient to use
Delay in release
8DLIS-AMU-ALIGARH

Types of Electronic Publication
E-Journals
E-Books
E-Databases
E-Dissertations and Thesis
E-Archives and Back files
Bulletin Boards (BBS)
Listservs, Blogs
E-Reference Sources
Institutional Repositories
Multi Media Resources

Electronic Journals
Electronic journals are a fast developing feature of
e-publishing. E-journals are full text journals that
accessible via internet
David Plunger and Brain Shakel, 1990defined e-
journal as “e-journals are those whose text materials
are directly entered by file transfer from a machine
readable form, whose editorial processes are
facilitated by computer and whose articles are
available in electronic form to the reader.
10DLIS-AMU-ALIGARH

Types E-Journals
EonlyJournals:Someoftheelectronicjournals,

ParallelElectronicJournals:Thesetypesof

CD-ROMjournals:Commercialpublishershavealso

Eg.www.jbc.org,www.ijc.com(InternetJournalof
Chemistry)
11DLIS-AMU-ALIGARH

Advantages of E-Journals
Speed
Easily searchable
Interactive
Accessible
Links
Inexpensive
Multiple capabilities
Flexibility
12DLIS-AMU-ALIGARH

Disadvantages of E-Journals
Perishable Citation: Web sites change their
URLs or frequently disappear altogether
Archiving
Authenticity:
Inconvenient to use

E –BOOKS
An electronic book is usually a collection of digital
objects or documents, which in turn are packaged
and formatted with the intention of being displayed
on a handled device or read by a speech generating
application.
Electronic books also include versions, which are
available simultaneously in print and on the web.
Some of the drawbacks to electronic books are that
they are difficult to use for sustained reading from a
computer screen
15DLIS-AMU-ALIGARH

Types of E-books
Downloadablee-books:Contentsareavailableon

demand.
Web accessible e-books: Published on the
provider’s web sites and may be accessed for
a purchase of books to receive indefinite
access.

A database is a collection of items of
information that share some thing in

Mode of Access of Databases
Databases can be accessed by using either
i) CD-ROM or ii ) Online
25DLIS-AMU-ALIGARH

E-Archives and Back files
Non current records of an institution,
organization, business or person, created for
working purposes and retain by the original
creator or a successor, for reference and/ or
historical interest.
26DLIS-AMU-ALIGARH

Bulletin Boards
Miniature form of an online system for a cost
effective distribution of information in e-
forms. Electronic BBS are vital for computer
mediated communication among computer
users. Often devoted to single topics. One of
the earliest forms of the electronic
networking.
27DLIS-AMU-ALIGARH

General Application of BBS
E-mail
E-Computer Conference
E-Publishing
Current Content
28DLIS-AMU-ALIGARH

Listservs
Use e-mail to communicate
Access by subscription
May be moderated; usually informal exchange of
information
Many maintain archives of old messages,
sometimes, web accessible
Listserv in Library Science
[email protected]

E-Reference Sources
Reference Sources like Biographical
sources,Dictionaries, Encyclopedias,
Thesaurus, Indexes and abstracts, etc. play
very important part in research
These form a special category of documents
meant for consultation or reference
Now a good number of reference sources are
available on internet and CD-ROMs.

Electronic Theses and
Dissertations (ETDs)
Theses and Dissertations have traditionally been
quite limited with regard to when, where, how and
to whom they are accessible
This limitation is solved by the Electronic Theses
and Dissertations (ETDs).
An ETD is a document that explains the research or
scholarship of a researcher/student which is
expressed in a form simultaneously suitable for
machine archives and worldwide retrieval

Multimedia Resources
The word multimedia refers to the
integration of multiple media –such as visual
imaging, text, video and sound and
animation, in one level. On another level,
interactive multimedia refers to the ability of
the user to control these components and
interact with them as needed.
34DLIS-AMU-ALIGARH

Multimedia…..
In a Multi Media every file containing information
is called an object. The objects can be text, images,
audio files, video films, video animation sequence
sound tracks, or any application software packages
in the computer. The main feature of Multi Media is
link where one can navigate from one to another
and with these links any object in the computer can
be linked to each other.
35DLIS-AMU-ALIGARH

Institutional Repository (IR)
An institutional repository is a digital archive of the
intellectual product created by the faculty, research
staff, and students of an institution and accessible to
end users both within and outside of the institution
Collection,preservation,anddisseminationofan
institution’scollectivescholarlyresources.
Actassignificantpointersofaninstitution’s

Blogs
A blog can be anything we want it to be: an
online diary, a commentary on news events,
or a chat room for our friends. It can also be
a medium for social scientists to
communicate with colleagues, and to share
their insights and uncertainties with a broader
public
