🌸 Slide 2: Introduction
Description:
Emasculation helps breeders ensure that only the desired pollen fertilizes the flower. It maintains purity in crosses and is essential in the creation of hybrid varieties.

🎯 Slide 3: Objectives of Emasculation
Description:
The main aim is to obtain new hybrid combinations by preventing self-fertilization. It ensures cross-pollination, promotes desired traits, and prevents contamination from unwanted pollen.
---
🧬 Slide 4: Methods of Emasculation
Description:
Different methods are used depending on the crop and flower type:
Hand emasculation with forceps is most common.
Hot water or alcohol methods kill pollen grains.
Genetic or chemical emasculation uses male-sterile lines or chemicals to prevent pollen formation.

Emasculation in Plant Breeding Removal of anthers to prevent self-pollination Prepared by: Aman Kourav
Introduction • Emasculation means removal of anthers before pollen is shed. • Prevents self-pollination and ensures cross-pollination. • Commonly used in hybridization programs.
Objectives of Emasculation • To obtain desired hybrid combinations. • To prevent contamination from self-pollen. • To promote controlled pollination between selected parents.
Methods of Emasculation • Hand Emasculation – using forceps/tweezers to remove anthers. • Hot Water Method – dipping buds in warm water (e.g., 45°C for 10 min). • Alcohol Method – brief alcohol treatment to kill pollen. • Genetic & Chemical Methods – using male sterility or chemicals.
Steps in Hand Emasculation 1. Select a mature but unopened flower. 2. Carefully remove anthers with forceps. 3. Cover the flower with a paper or butter bag. 4. Tag and label the emasculated flower.
Importance in Plant Breeding • Essential for hybrid seed production. • Ensures genetic purity and desired trait combination. • Widely used in crops like rice, wheat, cotton, and tomato.
