Endangered Animals Made by: Jair Aguilar, Ernesto Perez and Max Gonzales

Lines of inquiry What can we do to help?-Responsibility Central Idea : There are many ways we make animals endangered. Why are they going endangered?-Causation What happens if they go extinct?-Consequence Why are they important to the ecosystem?

How C heetahs are endangered A ccording to National Geographic “Cheetahs face extinction pressure from climate change, hunting by humans, and habitat destruction.” this reduces the population of cheetahs. https://cheetah.org/

Illegal Wildlife trade Illegal wildlife trade impacts cheetahs negatively . This means cheetahs have been traded and sold for their unique fur and skin. This means cheetahs have been poached and captured for this, this decreases the population.

Why are cheetahs important? If cheetahs went extinct the whole savannah food web would collapse because too many herbivores would roam, all of the producers would perish.

What can we do to help? Something we can do to help is “Reduce the amount of food you consume” according to un.org the reason for this is “what you eat and how much you throw away all contribute to greenhouse gas emissions.” Greenhouse gases is what causes global warming, which is one of the main factors of greenhouse gas. Many species populations are decreased due to greenhouse gas emissions.

Consequences According to Cheetah.org “ If cheetahs no longer existed, there would be a domino effect referred to as a trophic cascade. There would be too many herbivores resulting in loss of vegetation, greater soil erosion, less available water, and a negative impact on the health of the ecosystem.” this means that the food web will be ruined making a devastating impact on the human race.

How are elephants endangered? According to worldwildlife.com, one way elephants are going extinct is by ivory trade, in China this is most common. Even though it is illegal Chinese consumer desire still does it. https://elephantconservation.org/

Habitat Loss According to worldwildlife.com “Elephants are also losing their habitats and ancient migratory routes due to expanding human settlements into their habitat, agricultural .development, and the construction of Infrastructure such as roads, canals. a nd fences that fragment their habitat.”

How are elephants important? Elephant are important to the ecosystem because help maintain forest and savanna ecosystem for other species and they give fertilizer from their poop so the poop is good for the plants so without them they don't fertilize earth.

What can we do to help? One way we can help is to apply stricter laws against poaching of elephants. This can positively affect the elephants, decreasing the poaching of elephants .

The consequences If elephants go extinct there would be less vegetation because their feces act as a natural fertilizer to the plants native to the savanna . Herbivores would have less food, resulting in a drop in their population. I got all of this information from worldwildlife.com.

Why are Giant Otters endangered? Giant otters are endangered because of overharvesting of fish according to peru.wcs.org. This impacts the giant otter population negatively . https://www.wildcru.org/research/giant-otter-project/

Poaching for skin According to peru.wcs.org poachers kill giant otters for the following: Coats, blankets, hats, etc. This is terrible and means people dont kill for any other reason than for sport. The population of giant otters has been failing because of this since 1946.

What can we do to help GIant Otters? We can help Giant otters by completely avoiding eating too much of the following: Tuna, Shark, and Halibut, according to unity.edu. Another way to help is to “strengthen Legislation and Law Enforcement” which is basically “Stricter laws around the sale and trade of animal products” and “Stricter laws around buying and selling exotic pets”, according to unity.edu.

The Consequences Giant otters are important because they “control prey species population sizes to help keep the river ecosystem in balance.”, according to amazonaid.org. Meaning that if giant otters go extinct the rainforest ecosystem would crumble. And slowly more and more prey animals would overpopulate and overwhelm the entire ecosystem.
