•Material Handling
•Job Evaluation
•Quality Control

Material Handling
•Materials handling can be also defined as ‘the function dealing with
the preparation, placing and positioning of materials to facilitate their
movement or storage’.
•Material handling is the art and science involving the movement,
handling and storage of materials during different stages of
manufacturing.
•includes every consideration of the product except the actual
processing operation.

OBJECTIVES OF MATERIAL HANDLING
•Minimisecost of material handling.
•Minimisedelays and interruptions by making available the materials
at the point of use at right quantity and at right time.
•Increase the productive capacity of the production facilities by
effective utilization of capacity and enhancing productivity.
•Safety in material handling through improvement in working
condition.
•Maximum utilisationof material handling equipment.
•Prevention of damages to materials.
•Lower investment in process inventory.

SELECTION OF MATERIAL HANDLING EQUIPMENTS
4. COST CONSIDERATIONS
•This is one of the most important considerations. The above factors can help to
narrow the range of suitable equipment, while costing can help in taking a final
decision. Several cost elements need to be taken into consideration when
comparisons are made between various items of equipment that are all capable
of handling the same load.

2. INDUSTRIAL TRUCKS
•Industrial trucks are more flexible in use than conveyors since they can move
between various points and are not permanently fixed in one place.

Job Evaluation
•Job evaluation is the process of analyzing and assessing the various
jobs systematically to ascertain their relative worth in an organization.
•Job is evaluated on the basis of their content and is placed in the
order of their importance.
•Job evaluation rates the job and the person or man. It considers the
demand of the job in terms of efforts and abilities but does not take
into account individual abilities and efforts.

Objectives of Job Evaluation
•The basic objective of job evaluation is to ascertain the relative worth of each job
through an objective evaluation so that remuneration may be fixed for different jobs.
The following are the objectives of job evaluation in a manufacturing facility:
•To gather data and information relating to job description, job specification and
employee specifications for various jobs in an organization.
•To compare the duties, responsibilities and demands of a job with that of other jobs.
•To determine the hierarchy and place of various jobs in an organization.
•To determine the ranks or grades of various jobs.
•To ensure fair and equitable wages on the basis of relative worth or value of jobs. In
other words, equal wages are fixed to the jobs of equal worth or value.
•To minimize wage discrimination based on sex, age, caste, region, religion etc.

Need for Job Evaluation
•Due to the increasing rate of mechanization and automation in
engineering, it has become unrealistic to pay workers on the basis of
their output, as in most it is the mechanical equipment that
determines the rate of output or production.
•Job evaluation helps the management in evolving a rational and
consistent wage policy and salary structure by providing criteria for
fixation of salaries and wages.
•It provides a process of determining the wage differentials for
different jobs, thus ensuring a uniform standard is applied across all
jobs in the manufacturing organization.
•As it tends to eliminate wage inequalities, it ensures and maintains a
harmonious relationship between the employer and the employees.

Need for Job Evaluation
•Job evaluation programmeshould be implemented carefully. The
following principles helps in successful implementation of the
programme:
