Tobacco kills over 163,600 people each year in Pakistan. Almost 31,000 of these are due to passive smoking. Tobacco causes about 16.0% of all male and 4.9% of female deaths. Overall, 10.9% of all deaths are caused by tobacco.
Millions of People are exposed to Passive Smoking each day: 72.5% of adults (16.8 million people) at workplaces. 86% of adults visiting restaurants (49.2 million people) 76.2% of adults using public transport.. 37.8% of youth (ages 13-15) in public places 21% of youth in their homes.
2. Environmental Hazards Tobacco products negatively impact and damage our environment. Cigarette butts are toxic waste. Discarded lit cigarettes can cause fires, which can damage homes and land. It is very costly to clean up cigarette waste – a problem that continues to grow every year. It contributes to deforestation, soil degradation and desertification. Cigarette butts cause pollution by being carried, as runoff, to drains and from there to rivers, beaches and oceans. Organic compounds (such as nicotine, pesticide residues and metal) seep from cigarette butts into aquatic ecosystems, becoming acutely toxic to fish and microorganisms.
3. Financial Hazards The economic cost of smoking in Pakistan is Rs 615.07 billion (US$3.85 billion), equal to 1.6% of Pakistan's GDP. In 2019, the economic cost of smoking was about five times greater than the revenue from the tobacco industry. Money spent on tobacco reduces households' spending on food, health, education, housing, and household durables. In Pakistan, tobacco-consuming households spend on average 2.7% of their monthly budget on tobacco. Poor households spend 3.0% of their budget on tobacco. This is more than they spend on education (1.8%)
Tobacco use continues to grow in developing countries including in Pakistan due to steady population growth, low prices, lack of awareness about its dangers and aggressive tobacco industry marketing efforts. Youth and women are their main targets .
Quitting Smoking There are lots of benefits to giving up smoking. Your health starts to improve almost straight away and you reduce your risk of developing many diseases. You will no longer affect those around you with your second-hand smoke and you'll also save money. Your environment also becomes safer and cleaner. Quitting is hard, followed by some withdrawal symptoms, which last from a few days to a few weeks, but it has many benefits to it. If you can’t withdraw the first time, don’t lose hope or be hard on yourself. Remember, relapses can happen. Studies show that smokers may need about 30 attempts to quit before they are successful. Understand your triggers and make plans to counter them.
