Let us learn how to Identify Major Points and Key Themes
Major point is basically called Main Idea . It tells the main topic of the text or the story and it is what all or mostly talk about. Main idea of the text or story is commonly the first or last sentence.
It helps us to understand what a text/story is mainly about. Here are some tips to find the main idea of text/story: ¬ Look at the picture ¬ Identify the topic
Look for words that are use repeatedly Reread the first and last sentences Key themes of the text/story is the lesson or message. It is usually the character’s attitude or traits shown in text/story.
Often key themes used are friendship, hard work, happiness, honesty, kindness and courage. To identify the lesson or the message of the text you should understand the character’s feeling or traits.
The carabao is a useful animal. It is a farm animal. It helps the farmer on the farm. It plows the field. It pulls the cart. It carries things to the market. The carabao does many things for the farmer.

Every story has different elements. It has characters, settings, and events. These significant details play important roles in understanding the story.
Aside from these story elements, stories also give specific major points and key themes. As a reader, it is necessary that you are able to identify the major points and key theme shown in each story.
The Studious Pupil
Anthony is a studious pupil. He performs well in school. He gets good grades in almost all of his subjects. In school, he listens well to his teacher.
He also actively participates in class discussions. At home, he reads a lot of books during his free time. He also does his assignments. He prepares his projects before the deadline.
He studies well to serve as good example to other pupils. He also wants to achieve his dreams someday.
The selection above tells us that Anthony is a studious pupil as he studies well in school and at home. This is the major point. It also tells that studying well can help one get good grades and be successful in life. This is the theme.
Marie is a lover of plants. She grows different kinds of vegetable plants. She spends hours in her garden every day. She always waters them. She is very happy when working in her garden.

In every story, our goal is to understand its major point. In coming up with the key theme, you have to take note of the major or main ideas.
