Telling Story in the Right Order 8 1

Arrange the pictures in the right order of morning activities by writing numbers 1-3 1 2 3

What happens if we tell a story in the wrong order? That’s why today, we’ll learn how to arrange events in the correct order

The Lion and the Mouse One day, a lion caught a little mouse. The mouse begged, “Please don’t eat me. Someday I will help you.” The lion laughed but let the mouse go. Later, the lion was trapped in a hunter’s net. The mouse came and chewed the ropes until the lion was free. The lion thanked the mouse, realizing even little friends can be a big help.

Comprehension Questions: What happened first in the story? What did the lion do when he caught the mouse? What problem did the lion face? How did the mouse help the lion? What happened at the end?

Let us go back to signal words used in procedural text. We use the words first, next, then and finally. We are going to use these signal words to retell the events from the story.

First, the lion caught a mouse. Next, the lion let the mouse go. Then, the lion was caught in a net. Finally, the mouse freed the lion.

Arrange the following pictures in proper order according to the events in the story.

A B C D

Sequencing Race Learners are grouped. Each group receives strips of sentences from the story (scrambled). They will arrange the sentences in the correct order. Each group reads their final sequence using signal words.

Complete the statement. 1. We use _________, _________, _________, and _________ to show order of events. 2. Sequencing events helps us ____________________________________. first next then finally understand the story better.

Write the letter of the correct answer. 1 . What happened first in The Lion and the Mouse? a) The mouse helped the lion. b) The lion caught the mouse. c) The lion was trapped 2. What happened next after the lion caught the mouse? a) The mouse chewed the ropes. b) The lion let the mouse go. c) The lion roared loudly.

3. What happened then? a) The lion was trapped in a net. b) The lion freed the mouse. c) The mouse ran away. 4. What happened finally? a) The lion ate the mouse. b) The mouse freed the lion. c) The lion stayed in the net. 5. Short Answer: Why is it important to tell events in the correct order?

Problems and Solutions in Stories 8 2

A B C D

When you watch a movie or read a story, what makes it exciting? In stories, events happen in a certain order. Today we will focus on another important part—problems and solutions.

The Boy and the Thorn One day, a little boy stepped on a thorn while playing. He cried because it hurt so much. His mother rushed to him and gently pulled the thorn out. She cleaned the wound and put medicine on it. The boy smiled and thanked his mother.

Comprehension Questions: 1. Who are the characters in the story? 2. What happened to the boy? 3. What was the problem in the story? 4. How was the problem solved? 5. What can we learn from the story?

Problem – the difficulty or challenge faced by the character. Solution – how the problem was fixed Problem: Solution: A little boy stepped on a thorn. His mother removed the thorn and treated the wound.

Match the problems with their solution. Problems Solutions _____1. Miguel spilled his juice on the floor. A. The pupils worked together to clean up before going home. ____2. The school garden’s plants were drying up. B. Ella shared her crayons with her friend. ____3. Liza’s pencil broke during a quiz. C. He got a mop and cleaned it up right away. ____4. The classroom was messy after art class. D. She borrowed a pencil from her seatmate. ____5. Ella’s friend was sad because she lost her crayons. E. The students decided to water the plants every morning. C E D A B

Problem-Solution Detectives • The class will be divided into groups. • Each group is given a short mini-story. • Identify the problem and solution in their assigned story and write it on a chart. • Groups present their answers to the class.

Complete the statement: 1. A problem is __________. 2. A solution is __________.

Anna forgot her homework at home. She was worried because her teacher might get angry. During break, her father came to school and gave her the homework. Anna felt relieved and happy. Questions: Who are the characters in the story? What was Anna’s problem? What was the solution? How did Anna feel at the end of the story?

Predicting Possible Ending 8 3

Have you ever guessed what will happen next in your favorite movie or story? How did you know what might happen?

Today, we will learn how to predict the ending of a story. Predicting means making a smart guess about what might happen next based on what we read or hear. This will help us become better readers and thinkers .

Unlocking of Difficulties • Brave – not afraid • Lost – cannot find the way • Helped – gave assistance • Forest – place with many trees

The Lost Puppy One day, a little puppy named Max got lost in the park. He looked around and could not find his way home. Then, he saw a kind girl named Mia. She noticed that Max looked scared and hungry. Mia picked him up and decided to help him find his owner. They went around asking people if they knew who owned the puppy…

• What do you think will happen next?” • How might the story end?

Let us analyze the story. • Who found Max? • What kind of girl is Mia? • What did she do when she noticed Max is scared and lost? • Because Mia is kind, what do you think she will do? • Can you predict what will happen to the puppy?

When predicting possible ending, we can use the characters’ traits and attitudes as clue. We can also base our predictions on other details of the story.

GROUP ACTIVITY Divide class into 3–4 groups. Each group makes a possible ending for the story (The Lost Puppy). Examples: 1. Mia finds the puppy’s owner and returns Max safely. 2. Mia adopts Max and becomes his new owner. 3. The owner gives Mia a reward for helping. Groups share their predicted endings.

What did we do to make our predictions? What helped us guess the story’s ending?

In 1-2 sentences, write a possible ending for this story. Tom planted a seed in the garden. Every day, he watered it and took care of it. After a few days, he saw a tiny sprout coming out of the soil…

Digging for Details in Informational Texts 8 4

Let us recall the story of The Lost Puppy. Who are the characters in the story? Where is the setting of the story? What are the events in the story? These questions shows important details from a story. Today, we will read a different kind of text—not a story, but an informational text . Let’s see what important details we can find.

When you read about animals, plants, or places, why is it important to remember the details? Details help us understand the topic better and give us facts we can share with others.

Main Idea - The main idea tells what the text is mostly about. The details are the facts that support the main idea.

The Honeybee Honeybees play an important role in a garden ecosystem. They are small insects that live in groups called colonies. They work together to collect nectar from flowers. The nectar is turned into honey, which they store in their hives. Bees are very important because they help plants grow by carrying pollen from one flower to another. Without bees, many plants and crops would not grow well.

Comprehension Questions: What is the text mostly about? What are some important facts mentioned? Why are bees important to plants?

From the text, The Honeybee, let us note important details. What is the main idea? The honeybees play an important role in a garden ecosystem. What are the supporting details? They live in colonies. They collect nectar from flowers. They make honey. They help plants grow.

Saving Water Water is very important for all living things. People need water to drink, cook, and clean. Animals and plants also need water to live. We can save water by turning off the faucet when not in use and fixing leaking pipes. Saving water helps everyone have enough to use in the future.

GROUP ACTIVITY The class will be grouped into three. Each group will identify the main idea of the text and note at least 4 significant details. Each group will write their answer in a manila paper and present it afterwards.

Complete the statements to summarize today’s lesson by choosing the accurate word from the parenthesis. Informational texts give us (facts, opinion). The (main idea, supporting details) tells what the text is all about. The (main idea, supporting details) add information about the topic.

Read this short passage then write the main idea and list 4 supporting details: The Sun is very important because it gives light and heat to the Earth. The Sun helps plants grow by giving them light and energy. It keeps people, animals, and plants warm. The Sun also helps us see during the day. Without the Sun, Earth would be dark, cold, and lifeless. Main Idea:____________________________________ Supporting details: 1.___________________________ 2.__________________________________________ 3.________________________________________ 4._________________________________________

Digging for Details in Informational Texts 8 5

What do you think happened before the picture?

When we read, authors may not always say everything directly. We use facts and our thinking skills to draw conclusions.

Fact A fact is something that is true and can be proven. It tells what really happens or exists Example: The sun rises in the east. Dogs have four legs.

Conclusion A conclusion is what we think or decide after we read or observe something. It is a smart guess based on facts or clues. Example: • Fact: The ground is wet. • Conclusion: It must have rained.

The School Garden The school garden had many wilted plants. Some leaves turned yellow and dry. The soil was very hard and cracked. The teacher reminded the class that no one had watered the garden for two weeks.

Comprehension Questions: 1. What facts are stated in the passage? 2. What can you conclude about why the plants wilted? 3. How do you know your conclusion is correct?

Fact or Conclusion Identify if the following is a fact or conclusion. 1. The ice cream is melting. 2. The ice cream melted because it was left in the sun. 3. The library is quiet. Students are reading. 4. The students enjoy reading.

During the clean-up drive, students collected many plastic bottles, wrappers, and plastic bags from the playground. The trash bins were empty when they started. What do the facts tell us? What conclusion can you draw about the trash problem in the playground?

How do we draw conclusion? When we draw a conclusion, we use facts + thinking to form an idea.

People are wearing jackets and scarves outside. The weather must be cold. The dog is wagging its tail and jumping around. The dog is happy to see its owner.

It might rain soon. The sky is filled with dark clouds. The boy studies every night and listens to his teacher. He will probably get good grades.

Read this passage: Ana was yawning many times in class. She rubbed her eyes and laid her head on the desk. She said she stayed up late watching TV. Questions: What are the facts in the story? What conclusion can you draw about Ana’s condition in class?
