Imagine your battery pack as a bucket brigade fighting a fire. Each cell is a bucket, and ideally, they all carry the same amount of water (usable energy). But in reality, some buckets (cells) might be slightly bigger or smaller.
Without cell balancing (left side), it's like some firefighters (stronger cells) are constantly running back and forth, emptying their buckets before the weaker ones even arrive. This means less water (usable energy) is delivered to the fire (load), and the weaker cells become overworked and can potentially fail.
Cell balancing (right side) is like having a synchronized bucket brigade. A coordinator ensures everyone empties their buckets (discharges) at a similar rate, maximizing the total water delivered. This not only uses the full capacity of the stronger cells but also prevents the weaker ones from being overloaded, extending the life of the entire brigade (battery pack).
