ENVIRONMENTAL CRISIS AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Slide Content

ENVIRONMENTAL CRISIS & SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Discuss the origins and manifestations of global environmental crises. Relate everyday encounters with pollution, global warming, desertification, ozone depletion and many others with a larger picture of environmental degradation. Examine the policies and programs of governments around the world that address global environmental crisis. Learning Outcomes R

R

ENVIRONMENTAL THE WORLD’S LEADING PROBLEMS 1 The depredation caused by industrial and transportation toxins and plastic in the ground 2 Changes in global weather patterns 3 Overpopulation 4 The exhaustion of the world’s natural non-renewable resources from oil to minerals to water

ENVIRONMENTAL THE WORLD’S LEADING PROBLEMS 5 A waste disposal catastrophe 6 The destruction of ecosystems and loss of biodiversity 7 The reduction of oxygen and the increase of carbon dioxide 8 The depletion of the ozone layer

ENVIRONMENTAL THE WORLD’S LEADING PROBLEMS 9 Deadly acid rain 10 Water pollution 11 Urbanization 12 pandemics and other threats to public health 13 A radical alteration of food systems due to genetic modification in food production

V MTOE (Million Tonnes of Oil Equivalent) The tonne of oil equivalent (toe) is a unit of energy defined as the amount of energy released by burning one tonne of crude oil. It is approximately 42 gigajoules or 11,630 kilowatt-hours, although as different crude oils have different calorific values, the exact value is defined by convention; several slightly different definitions exist. The toe is sometimes used for large amounts of energy. (Wikipedia).

CONCLUSION 1 "Climate change affects the fundamental requirements for health – clean air, safe drinking water, sufficient food and secure shelter. Many of the major killers such as diarrhoeal diseases, malnutrition, malaria and dengue are highly climate-sensitive and are expected to worsen as the climate changes. Areas with weak health infrastructure – mostly in developing countries – will be the least able to cope without assistance to prepare and respond. Reducing emissions of greenhouse gases through better transport, food and energy-use choices can result in improved health." ~World Health Organization 2 People are forced to think about their role as citizens of the world than environmental degradation. Every person belongs to the same world – a world that is increasingly vulnerable. 3 There must be global solutions to global environmental degradation.
