WELCOME TO
GEOGRAPHY!

LET'S KNOW ABOUT
WHAT IS GEOGRAPHY?
DERIVES FROM TWO GREEK WORDS
GEO=EARTH,+
GRAPHY=DESCRIPTION
SO, GEOGRAPHY MEANS “THE DESCRIPTION OF THE EARTH”
BUT GEOGRAPHY
IS ALL ABOUT
EVERYTHING!

BRANCHES AND TYPES OF GEORAPHY

HOW MANY BRANCHES OF
GEOGRAPHY?
TWOMAIN BRANCHES
1. PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY
2.HUMANGEOGRAPHY
But there are others fields too.
LET’S DESCRIBE THEM…..

PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY
–IS THE STUDY OF THE WORLD’S PHYSICAL
FEATURES
—IT’S LANDFORMS , BODIES OF WATER , CLIMATES,
SOILS, AND PLANTS.
Geographers ask…
➢Where do mountains come from?
➢Why do rivers flow in certain places?
➢Weather/climate patterns?

HUMAN GEOGRAPHY
-STUDY OF HUMANS AND THEIR IDEAS,
AND
-THE IMPACT OF HUMAN IDEAS AND
ACTIONS ON THE EARTH.
Human Geographers ask…
What jobsdo they have?
What cropswill grow there?
What makes peoplemove from place to place?
What types of housesdo they build?

IMPORTANCE OF GEOGRAPHY

-HELP US KNOW MORE ABOUT EACH OTHER
AND OUR CULTURES,
-HELP US UNDERSTAND OUR ENVIRONMENT
AND PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH IT,
-HELP US BETTER UNDERSTAND THE WAYS
IN WHICH EACH OF US INTERACTS WITH,
AND IS DEPENDENT ON OTHERS AND THE
ENVIRONMENT AND
-HELP US SOLVE ENVIRONMENTAL,
POLITICAL, ECONOMIC, AND SOCIAL
PROBLEMS.

THE FIVE THEMES OF
GEOGRAPHY
•Location
•Place
•Human-Environment Interaction
•Movement
•Regions

LOCATION
WHERE ARE WE?
•.Absolute Location
–A latitude and longitude
(global location) or a street
address (local location).
–Paris France is 48
o
North Latitude and
2
o
East Longitude.
–The White House is
located at 1600
Pennsylvania Ave.
•Relative Location
–Described by
landmarks, time,
direction or distance.
From one place to
another.
–Go 1 mile west
on main street
and turn left for
1 block.

PLACE
What is it like there, what kind of place is it?
•Human Characteristics
•What are the main
languages, customs, and
beliefs.
•How many people live,
work, and visit a place.
•Physical Characteristics
•Landforms (mountains,
rivers, etc.), climate,
vegetation, wildlife, soil, etc.

HUMAN-ENVIRONMENT
INTERACTION
•How do humans and the environment affect each other?
–We depend on it.
•People depend on the Tennessee River for water and transportation.
–We modify it.
•People modify our environment by
heating and cooling buildings for comfort.
–We adapt to it.
•We adapt to the environment by wearing
clothing suitable for summer (shorts) and
winter (coats), rain and shine.

MOVEMENT
•How are people, goods, ideas moved from place to place?
–Human Movement
•Trucks, Trains, Planes
–Information Movement
•Phones, computer (email), mail
–Idea Movement
•How do fads move from place to place?
TV, Radio, Magazines

REGIONS
•How are Regions similar to and different from other places?
–Formal Regions
•Regions defined by governmental or administrative boundaries (States,
Countries, Cities)
•Regions defined by similar characteristics (Corn Belt, Rocky Mountain
region, Chinatown).
–Functional Regions
•Regions defined by a function (newspaper service area, cell phone
coverage area).
–Vernacular Regions
•Regions defined by peoples perception (middle east, the south, etc.)

SCOPE OF GEOGRAPHY
ASWIDEAS EARTH…….

Why Every Student Should Study Geography?
✓To understand basic physical systems that affect everyday life
(e.g. earth-sun relationships, water cycles, wind and ocean
currents).
✓To learn the location of places and the physical and cultural
characteristics of those places in order to function more
effectively in our increasingly interdependent world.
✓To understand the geography of past times and how
geography has played important roles in the evolution of
people, their ideas, places and environments.

✓To develop a mental map of your community, province or
territory, country and the world so that you can
understand the “where” of places and events.
✓To explain how the processes of human and physical
systems have arranged and sometimes changed the
surface of the Earth.
✓To understand the spatial organization of society and see
order in what often appears to be random scattering of
people and places.

✓To recognize spatial distributions at all scales –local and
worldwide –in order to understand the complex connectivity of
people and places.
✓To be able to make sensible judgements about matters involving
relationships between the physical environment and society.
✓To appreciate Earth as the homeland of humankind and provide
insight for wise management decisions about how the planet’s
resources should be used.
✓To understand global interdependence and to become a better
global citizen.

ENVIRONMENTAL GEOGRAPHY
LET’S KNOW ABOUT IT…….

1. A BRANCH OF GEOGRAPHY.
2. DESCRIBES AND EXPLAINS THE SPATIAL ASPECTS OF
COMMUNICATIONS BETWEEN HUMANS AND THEIR SOCIAL
AND NATURAL ENVIRONMENT.
WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT ENVIRONMENTAL
GEOGRAPHY?

LET’S KNOW
SCOPE OF ENVIRONMENTAL
GEOGRAPHY

1. Environmental System
2.Man-Environment Relationship in geography
3. Environment policy, Laws & Rules
4.Global Environment issues
5.Environment-Man-Society
6.Environmental Management

ENVIRONMENTAL GEOGRAPHY VS
ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE

WHY SHOULD STUDY ENVIRONMENTAL
GEOGRAPHY IN ENVIRONMENTAL
SCIENCE
?

❑It helps to understand the aerial distribution of phenomena.
❑To understand the spatial patterns and spatial organization.
❑Locational analysis, Regional analysis, Ecological studies.
❑To understand the man-environment relationship.
❑Find solutions to manage ecological problems.

❑Make people aware to protect the environment.
❑Proper use of natural resources.
❑Sustainable development and biovarietyconservation.
