UNIVERSITY OF KASHMIR DEPARTMENT OF GEOGRAPHY & DISASTER MANAGEMENT Topic EIA : Baseline Data Generation

NAME :- Waris Ahmad Ganie SUPERVISOR :- Dr. M. Sultan Bhat ROLL NO: - 21100120006 COURSE :- EIA and EMP SEMESTER :- 4 th .. (Fourth)

Introduction The term “ Baseline ” Refers to the collection of background information on the biophysical social and economic settings of proposed project areas. This Study serves the purpose of Baseline reference against which the impacts due to the implementation of the project are measured.

Purpose To provide a description of the current status and trends of Environmental factors ( eg . Air pollutant Concentration of the host area) against which predicted can be compared and evaluated in terms of significance To provide a means of depicting actual. Change by monitoring once a project has been initiated

Relevance of the Baseline Study Providing a reference point for impact assessment Identifying potential environmental, social, and economic impacts Facilitating public participation Meeting Regulatory Requirements

Various Baseline Study Involved in EIA process Physical Environment Baseline Study Biological Environment Baseline Study Socio-Cultural Baseline Study Economic Environment baseline Study Land Use Land Cover Baseline Study Water Quality And Quantity Baseline Study Air Quality Baseline study Noise And Vibration Baseline Study

Methods Of Baseline Data Collection Data Sources Primary Sources Secondary Sources Community consultation programmes Field Studies

Identification of Environmental Impacts Main Objective: Specify areas that are likely to be affected by implementation of the project. Impact identification starts at the early stage of scoping when data on both the project and sorrounding Environment are made available

Impact Predication Predicting the magnitude of a development likely impacts and evaluating their significance i s Core of Environmental Assessment Process. Prediction Should be based on the Available Environmental baseline of the project area ( Morris & Therivel ,1995 ) Prediction should be based on the available environmental baseline of the project area

Consideration for Impact Prediction Magnitude of Impact Extent of Impact Duration of Impact Significance of Impact Analysis of Alternative Analysis of alternatives is done to establish the preferred or most environmentally sound , financially feasible and benign option for achieving project objectives

Mitigation and Impact Management Mitigation is done to avoid minimise or offset predicted adverse impacts Objective of Mitigation Find better Alternatives and ways of doing this. Enhance the Environmental, Socio-economic Beneffits of a project Avoid , Minimize or Remedy adverse impacts
