TYPES OF NUCLEAR HAZARDS NUCLEAR ACCIDENTS: UNFORESEEN MISHAPS DURING POWER PLANT OPERATION OR WASTE MANAGEMENT. (FUKUSHIMA, CHERNOBYL) NUCLEAR WEAPONS DETONATION: INTENTIONAL EXPLOSION OF ATOMIC BOMBS, CAUSING WIDESPREAD DESTRUCTION.
IONISING RADIATION PARTICLE-TYPE AND WAVE-TYPE
IONIZING RADIATION IS A TYPE OF HIGH-ENERGY RADIATION THAT CAN KNOCK ELECTRONS OFF ATOMS AND MOLECULES. THIS CAN DAMAGE LIVING CELLS AND CAUSE HEALTH PROBLEMS. IT COMES IN TWO FORMS: PARTICLES (LIKE ALPHA RAYS) AND WAVES (LIKE X-RAYS). WE ENCOUNTER IT NATURALLY (FROM THE SUN) AND IN SOME MAN-MADE THINGS (X-RAY MACHINES).
IMMEDIATE EFFECTS OF HIGH RADIATION EXPOSURE ACUTE RADIATION SICKNESS: OCCURS AT HIGH DOSES (>1 SV). SYMPTOMS INCLUDE NAUSEA, VOMITING, HAIR LOSS, AND DEATH IN SEVERE CASES. SKIN BURNS: DIRECT EXPOSURE TO INTENSE RADIATION CAN CAUSE BURNS SIMILAR TO SUNBURNS.
LONG-TERM EFFECTS OF RADIATION EXPOSURE INCREASED RISK OF CANCER: RADIATION EXPOSURE CAN DAMAGE DNA, POTENTIALLY LEADING TO CANCER DEVELOPMENT OVER TIME. GENETIC EFFECTS: RADIATION DAMAGE CAN BE PASSED ON TO FUTURE GENERATIONS.

PREPARING FOR A NUCLEAR EVENT ASSEMBLE AN EMERGENCY KIT: INCLUDE NON-PERISHABLE FOOD, WATER, FIRST-AID SUPPLIES, MEDICATIONS, AND A BATTERY-POWERED RADIO. DEVELOP A COMMUNICATION PLAN: DECIDE ON A MEETING PLACE AND COMMUNICATION METHOD FOR YOUR FAMILY IN CASE OF SEPARATION. STAY INFORMED: FAMILIARIZE YOURSELF WITH LOCAL EMERGENCY PLANS AND EVACUATION ROUTES.
STAYING SAFE DURING A NUCLEAR EVENT SEEK SHELTER INDOORS: IF ADVISED TO EVACUATE, DO SO PROMPTLY. OTHERWISE, FIND REFUGE IN A STURDY BUILDING, PREFERABLY WITH A BASEMENT. AFTER A NUCLEAR EVENT STAY SHELTERED: REMAIN INDOORS UNTIL ADVISED BY AUTHORITIES THAT IT IS SAFE TO GO OUTSIDE. RADIATION LEVELS WILL DECREASE OVER TIME. DECONTAMINATION: IF INSTRUCTED, CAREFULLY REMOVE OUTER CLOTHING AND SHOES OUTSIDE, PLACING THEM IN A PLASTIC BAG FOR PROPER DISPOSAL. WASH YOURSELF THOROUGHLY WITH SOAP AND WATER.
