Environmental Information System (ENVIS)

Environment Information System  provides information on environment and related subject areas to researchers, academicians, policy planners, environmentalists, scientists, engineers and the general public. It is a decentralized network of databases in operation since 1982-83 by and is run by the Ministry of Environment Forests and Climate Change . ENVIS has been designed as the National Focal Point (NFP) for International Referral System for Source of Environmental Information (INFOTERRA), a global environmental information network of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). In order to strengthen the information activities of the NFP, ENVIS was designated as the Regional Service Centre (RSC) of INFOTERRA of UNEP in 1985 for the South Asia Sub-Region countries. Introduction

Objectives of ENVIS To build up a repository and dissemination Centre in environmental science and engineering . To gear up state-of-art technologies of environmental information acquisition, processing, storage, retrieval and dissemination. To support and promote research, development and innovation in environmental information technology . To provide national environmental information service relevant to present needs and capable of meeting the future needs of the users, originators, processors and disseminators of information .

Objectives of ENVIS To build up storage, retrieval and dissemination capabilities, with the ultimate objective of disseminating information speedily to the users. To promote national and international cooperation and liaison for exchange of environment-related information. To promote, support and assist education and personnel training programmes designed to enhance environmental information processing and utilizing capabilities. To promote and exchange of environment-related information amongst developing countries.

The role of an ENVIS Centre is to act as a single-window information provider on various areas related to environment Each Centre is a part of a country-wide web-enabled network on which environment-related information collated and updated by each Centre is made publicly available on a single e-platform. Each ENVIS Centre updates and maintains an information database that includes descriptive information and numerical data for suitable dissemination. Descriptive information are maintained in the form of bibliographies, libraries, copies/ preprints/ abstracts of reports, articles, and research notes, and links to other databases/ networks. Numerical data on the subject/theme assigned to the Centre are being collected and analyzed , information products are developed for online dissemination, publications and reports . Role of ENVIS

Functions of ENVIS Maintaining a databank on all aspects of assigned subject area/ status of environment and related issues, and to host and maintain a website for its dissemination . D evelop an inventory of authentic and reliable information, and collect books, reports and journals for collation, retrieval, processing and analysis, and dissemination of information and database creation . Produce value-added information products including directories of information at State/regional / National level.

Functions of ENVIS Building linkages with information sources in the country and abroad for relevant and comprehensive information contents. Collects primary data to respond to queries and information sought by stakeholders in the form of copies of published reports, documents, abstracts and research papers .
