INTRODUCTION The officials make use of a number of equipments in trying to discharge their duties. We shall discuss the general equipment needed to officiate at any athletics meet.

Below is a list of the equipment: Gun Flags Measuring tape Hand bell Finishing tape Stop watch Chalkboard Stationeries

GUN It is always used in advanced or international competition. The starter uses the gun to start the race.

Whistle It is used in physical education to give command. In an athletics meet, it is also used for the following: To seek attention of the athletes and even spectators. The starter uses it to start a race where there is no gun. The re-call starter uses it to call the erring set of runners back .

Flags There are two flags in an athletic meet; red flag and white flag. Each time a red flag is raised in track events, it means that all is not ready. It is always used by the race starter when checking the positions of the runners while they are on your marks position. The white flag is up in track when all runners are ready and properly positioned. It gives the judges and time keepers wink to be alert.

Measuring tape This is a tape that is used in field events for: Measuring distance in throws and horizontal jumps. Confirming heights in vertical jumps

Hand bell This is the bell that is used to alert the runners in long distance races that they are going for the last lap.

Finishing tape This is used in local competitions where there are no electronic devices for placing positions. A rope or tape is held by two people at each end of the finishing line .

Stop watches These are watches that are used by time keepers to time the runners to know how many seconds, minutes or hours have they taken to complete a particular race.

Chalkboard This is a board that is used locally to record the preliminary results for both athletes and spectators race.

Stationeries This are results sheet, plane sheets, pencils, and other writing materials. They are used to collect results events

Conclusion It is important for officials to have access to these equipment as they contribute to fair play, decision-making and the overall smooth functioning of sports events.
