ERGONOMICS The word ergonomics comes from two Greek words: • ERGO : meaning “work” • NOMOS : meaning “laws” Ergonomics is a science focused on the study of human fit, and reducing fatigue and discomfort through product design.

ERGONOMICS Ergonomics applied to office furniture design requires considering how the products we design fit the people who use them. Whether at work, school, or home, when products fit the user, the result can be greater comfort, higher productivity, and reduced stress.

ERGONOMICS Ergonomics can be an integral part of design, manufacturing, and use. Knowing how the study of anthropometry, posture, repetitive motion, and workspace design affects the user is critical to a better understanding of ergonomics as they relate to end-user needs.

ANTHROPOMETRIC MEASUREMENTS Anthropometry is  a universal method of measuring the human body that can be applied to people of all ages, genders, and ethnicities Anthropometric data varies considerably between regional populations. For example, Scandinavian populations tend to be taller, while Asian and Italian populations tend to be shorter.

FILIPINO ANTHROPOMETRIC DATA IN THE DESIGN OF RESIDENTIAL SPACES & FURNITURE This section presents the standard dimensions of rooms and furniture based on relevant Filipino anthropometric data.

ROOMS The primary consideration here is ceiling height, while other dimensions, such as length and width, will ultimately depend on the room’s layout and furnishings. The standing height of the tallest Filipino male (95th percentile) is 178 cm. Adding 5 inches (12.7 cm) for headgear and 1.75 inches (4 cm) for footwear, the minimum acceptable ceiling height for rooms is 194.7 cm. However, the actual ceiling height will also depend on the size of the desired lighting fixtures and other installations. FILIPINO ANTHROPOMETRIC DATA IN THE DESIGN OF RESIDENTIAL SPACES & FURNITURE

FILIPINO ANTHROPOMETRIC DATA IN THE DESIGN OF RESIDENTIAL SPACES & FURNITURE DOORWAYS The relevant body dimensions for doorway design are: Standing height for doorway height. Hip width or shoulder width for doorway width. The established minimum standing height of 194.7 cm can be applied for doorway height. Comparing hip width and shoulder width data, the greatest value is the hip width of a 95th percentile male at 54.80 cm. Adding 2 cm for clothing allowance, the minimum acceptable doorway width is 56.80 cm.

MULTI-PURPOSE CHAIRS The relevant body dimensions for seat design are buttock width, popliteal height, and buttock-to-popliteal length: Buttock Width: This dimension determines the seat width. The greatest value from the available data is 59 cm, based on the 95th percentile male. Adding 2 cm for clothing allowance, the minimum acceptable seat width is 61 cm . MULTI-PURPOSE CHAIRS Popliteal Height: This dimension determines the seat height from the floor. The seat height should be low enough to minimize pressure on the underside of the thighs, which could restrict blood flow to the legs. The value to be used is 36 cm, derived from the 5th percentile female. Adding 4 cm for footwear allowance, the ideal seat height is 40 cm . MULTI-PURPOSE CHAIRS Buttock-to-Popliteal Length: This dimension determines the seat depth. To accommodate shorter individuals, the lowest value should be used. The value is 40 cm, based on the 5th percentile female. Adding 2 cm for clothing allowance, the ideal seat depth is 42 cm . DINING TABLE The primary consideration here is table height, while the length and width may vary depending on factors such as the number of people the table is designed to accommodate. The ideal table height is determined by adding the seat height to the thigh clearance height. From Section C, the established seat height is 40 cm . The greatest thigh clearance height from the available data is 16.50 cm , based on the 95th percentile male. Therefore, the ideal table height is 56.50 cm . KITCHEN COUNTER TOPS Kitchen tasks such as slicing, chopping, and stirring should ideally be performed at or slightly below elbow height. To accommodate the shortest possible person and ensure comfort, the standing height of a 5th percentile female is used. This height is 89 cm , and adding 4 cm for footwear allowance results in an ideal kitchen countertop height of 93 cm from the floor. SINGLE BED Only single beds are considered here, as other bed types have standardized sizes, such as queen size (152 x 203 cm) and king size (193 x 203 cm). The relevant body dimensions for single beds are: Standing height for bed length. Hip width or shoulder width for bed width. SINGLE BED The greatest values are used to accommodate the tallest and broadest Filipino user. Based on the available data, the greatest standing height is 178 cm (95th percentile male), and the greatest width is 54.80 cm (hip width, 95th percentile male). Adding 2 cm for clothing allowance, the minimum acceptable bed dimensions are 180 x 56.80 cm .
