Introductory Paragraph:
1.Purpose: Getting your reader involved in your essay
2.What it should include?
a.The thesis statement It is usually only one sentence and is made up of the topic,
focus, and three main points of the essay
b.Mini-outlineof the essay
c.Informs the reader what the essay is about
d.It contains ‘transitional hook’ or ‘bridge’ that connects introductory paragraph to
the next paragraph or first body paragraph

Introductory Paragraph-Example:
Eachyear,thousandsofpeoplethroughouttheUnitedStateschoosetospend
theirvacationscampinginthegreatoutdoors.Dependingonanindividual's
senseofadventure,therearevarioustypesofcampingtochoosefrom,
includinglogcabincamping,recreationalvehiclecamping,andtentcamping.
Ofthese,tentcampinginvolves"roughingit"themost,andwithproperplanning
theexperiencecanbegratifying.Evenwiththebestplanning,however,tent
campingcanbeanextremelyfrustratingexperienceduetouncontrolledfactors
suchasbadweather,wildlifeencounters,andequipmentfailures.

First Body Paragraph:
1.It should contain:
a.strongest argument
b.most significant example
c.cleverest illustration
d.an obvious beginning point
2.The first sentence of this paragraph shall include the “reverse hook” which ties in
with the transitional hook at the end of the introductory paragraph

3.The topic for this paragraph should be in the first or second sentence
4.This topic should relate to the thesis statement in the introductory
paragraph
5.The last sentence in this paragraph should also include transitional hook

First Body Paragraph:Strongest example

anddamp.Afterreachingtheirdestination,campersmustthen"setupcamp"inthedownpour.Thisincludes
keepingtheinsideofthetentdryandfreefrommud,gettingthesleepingbagssituateddryly,and
protectingfoodfromthedownpour.Ifthesleepingbagshappentogetwet,thecoldalsobecomesa
majorfactor.Asleepingbagusuallyprovideswarmthonacampingtrip…Morethanafewcampershave
hadtheirtentsblowndownbecauseofthewind,whichonceagainbeginsthefrustratingtaskof"settingup
camp"inthedownpour.Itiswisetochecktheweatherforecastbeforeembarkingoncampingtrips;
however,mothernatureisoftenunpredictableandthereisnoguaranteebadweatherwillbeeluded.

Second Body Paragraph:Second

minordiscomfort,somewildlifeencountersarepotentiallydangerous.Therearemanypoisonoussnakesin
theUnitedStates,suchasthewatermoccasinandthediamond-backrattlesnake.Whenhikinginthe
woods,thecampermustbecarefulwherehesteps.Also,thetentmustneverbeleftopen.Snakes,
searchingforeithershadefromthesunorshelterfromtherain,canenteratent.Anencounterbetweenan
unwarycamperandasurprisedsnakecanprovetobefatal.Run-inscanrangefromunpleasantto
dangerous,butthecampermustrealizethattheyaresometimesinevitable.

Third Body Paragraph:Weakest example
Perhapstheleastseriouscampingtroublesareequipmentfailures;thesetroublesoftenplaguefamilies
campingforthefirsttime.Theyarriveatthecampsiteatnightandhaphazardlysetuptheirnine-person
tent.Theythensettledownforapeacefulnight'srest.Sometimeduringthenightthefamilyisawakenedby
ahugecrash.Thetenthasfallendown.Sleepily,theyawakeandproceedtosetupthetentintherain.In
themorning,everyoneemergesfromthetent,exceptfortwo.Theirsleepingbagzippershavegotten
caught.Finally,afterfifteenminutesofstruggling,theyfreethemselves,onlytorealizeanotherproblem.
Eachfamilymember'ssleepingbaghasbeentouchingthesidesofthetent.Atentisonlywaterproofifthe
sidesarenottouched.Thesleepingbagsandclothingarealldrenched.Totallydisillusionedwiththe
"vacation,"thefrustratedfamilypacksupimmediatelyanddriveshome.Equipmentfailuresmaynotseem
veryserious,butaftercampersencounterbadweatherandannoyingpestsorwildanimals,thesefailures
canendanyremaininghopeforapeacefulvacation.

Concluding Paragraph:
1.This paragraph should include the following:
a.an allusionto the pattern used in the introductory paragraph
b.a restatement of the thesis statement, using some of the original language or language
that "echoes" the original language
c.a summaryof the three main points from the body of the paper
d.a final statement that gives the reader signals that the discussion has come to an end
This final statement may be a "call to action" in a persuasive essay

Concluding Paragraph-Example:
Thesethreetypesofcampingtroublescanstrikecampersalmostanywhere.Untilsomebrilliantscientist
inventsaweathermachinetocontrolbadweatherorakindofwildliferepellent,unluckycamperswill
continuetoshaketheirfistsinfrustration.Morethanlikely,equipmentwillcontinuetomalfunction.Evenso,
campingcontinuestobeafavouritepastimeofpeopleallacrosstheUnitedStates.Ifyouwantcampingto
beahappyexperienceforyou,learntolaughatleakytents,badweather,andbugs,oryouwillfind
yourselffrustratedandunhappy.
