AREAS OF SCIENTIFIC DISHONESTY PLAGIARISM: Using other people’s work without acknowledge their contribution. FABRICATION AND FALSIFICATION: Fabrication is making up results and recording or reporting them. Falsification is manipulating research materials, equipment, or processes or changing results. NONPUBLICATION OF DATA: Data was suppressed. FAULTY DATA GATHERING: If machines are not calibrated correctly, subjects do not follow procedures correctly, if untrained research assistants are used. POOR DATA STORAGE AND RETENTION: Should be available for verification of others. MISLEADING AUTHORSHIP: People take credit who really make very little contribution to the study. ETHICAL DECISION MAKING IN RESEARCH Although codes, policies, and principles are very important and useful, like any set of rules, they do not cover every situation, they often conflict, and they require considerable interpretation.
