Introduction
The Internet Of ThingsThe Internet Of Things
Origins of the Internet
The internet has been around since the 60s, starting as an idea to connect computers so scientists could share
information. In 1969, ARPANET launched, linking just four computers across different universities - it was basically the
first version of the internet we know today. Back then, computers were huge, expensive, and mostly used by
universities and governments, but by the 80s, personal computers started showing up in homes, and by the 2000s,
they had become faster, smaller, and way more affordable, making them a huge part of everyday life.

Access to the
Internet
This chart illustrates the significant rise in global
internet penetration over the past decade. In 2014,
only 37.4% of the population was online, but by
2018, this number had risen to 50.9%, largely due to
cheaper mobile devices and improved
telecommunications policies. The 2020 pandemic
drove a further surge to 58.8%, as remote work,
online learning, and digital socialising became the
norm. By 2024, internet penetration is projected to
reach 67.5%, connecting more than two-thirds of the
world’s population.

1000THE EVOLUTION OF
INTERNET SPEEDS
The evolution of internet speeds has dramatically transformed over the
past four decades. In the 1990s, dial-up connections, using home phone
lines, offered speeds of just 128 Kbps (0.128 Mbps). The rise of
broadband followed, providing speeds of up to 100 Mbps. Next came
fiber optic technology, offering speeds exceeding 1000 Mbps. Today,
wireless 5G network technology delivers lightning-fast speeds that rival
even the fastest fiber optic connections.

How Customers
Search for
Information
People use search
engines for convenience
as they offer instant
results from multiple
sources.
Social media platforms like TikTok and
Instagram offer engaging video
content and product demos, allowing
users to see products in action.
Consumers trust reviews from real
people and influencers.
Amazon is a trusted platform for product
searches as it offers reviews, star ratings,
and verified purchase feedback. Shoppers
can compare prices, watch product demos,
and get personalised recommendations,
making it easier to find what they are looking
for online.
Consumers now use AI-powered
search tools like Siri, Alexa, and
Google Assistant for instant
answers. AI-driven chatbots provide
real-time information.
What consumers buy online
Consumers buy a wide range of products and services online, this ranges from fashion and beauty products to
groceries. Digital services like streaming subscriptions and online courses are also popular. Convenience, price
comparisons, and exclusive online deals drive purchasing decisions, while fast delivery options make e-
commerce even more appealing.
Online video consumption
As of 2024, online video consumption continues to rise, with viewers spending an average of 17 hours per
week watching videos online. This presents a significant opportunity for businesses to engage with
consumers through video content. The graph opposite illustrates the most popular types of online videos.

Consumer Trends
How consumers' use of technology has changed over the past 3-5 years,
Consumer behavior has changed so much with faster internet and 5G. As of February 2025, there are 5.56
billion internet users, and mobile devices are now a huge part of everyday life. We use smartphones and
even smartwatches for everything—shopping, checking reviews, tracking our health, and more.
With instant access to information, people turn to digital platforms for product recommendations, learning,
and entertainment. Businesses have had to keep up, shifting more towards e-commerce and online
services to meet these growing expectations. Streaming platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime have
taken over entertainment, offering content you can only access online.
To sum it up, technology has made life easier and more connected, with digital devices now being our go-to
for almost everything.
