The origin of retailing in India can be traced back
to the emergence of vendors and hawkers, kirana
stores, corner stores and mom-and-pop stores
In early nineteen eighties these stores used to
cater the needs of local people
These retailers used to operate in a highly
unstructured and fragmented local market

retail and many indigenous franchise stores came
up with the help of Khadi & Village Industries

by few manufacturer owned retail outlets, mainly
textile industry
* Example: Bombay Dyeing, Raymonds Grasim
etc. Later, Titan successfully established a series
of showrooms for its premium watches

* In nineties. LPG (liberalization, privatization
and globalization) led to the dilution of
stringent restrictions which attracted national
and international retailers to establish retail
chains example domestic retailers like Cotton
World (Mumbai), Nirula's (Delhi) and the
Viveks and Nilgiris in the South and
international players like Nanz entered into the
Indian market

* The latter half of the 1990s saw a shift from
manufactures to pure retailers. For example: Food

* 1995 onwards retail industry saw an emergence
of shopping centers, hyper mart, malls etc mainly
in urban areas; with provide excellent shopping
experience for all segments of society
