EVOLUTION OF RETAIL IN
INDIA

The origin of retailing in India can be traced back
to the emergence of vendors and hawkers, kirana
stores, corner stores and mom-and-pop stores

In early nineteen eighties these stores used to
cater the needs of local people

These retailers used to operate in a highly
unstructured and fragmented local market

Scope of merchandise and services were limited

ยป Before 1990, organized retailing in India was led
by few manufacturer owned retail outlets, mainly
textile industry

* Example: Bombay Dyeing, Raymonds Grasim
etc. Later, Titan successfully established a series
of showrooms for its premium watches
