Evolution of
The Internet

THE HISTORY OF THE INTERNET

Introduction.
The history of internet begins with the development of the electronic computers in the 1950s. It was invented
for the military purposes and now it is a global network which changed the world and our lives.
The Internet is a worldwide system of interconnected networks and computers.
ARPANET was the first operational network and the predecessor developed by the U.S.Department of
Defence.
The inventors of the World Wide Web are Tim Berners-Lee and to a lesser Robert Kayo. Tim Berners-Lee is
the author of HTTP, URI / URL and HTML technologies. In 1980, he worked as a software consultant at the
European Council for Nuclear Research. In Geneva he wrote the Enquire program for his own needs (English
Enquire, which could be translated as "Investigator"), which used random associations to store data and laid
the conceptual basis for the World Wide Web.
History of the Internet Timeline – An Ever-Evolving Digital World.

In 1989, working at CERN on the organization's internal network, Tim Berners-Lee proposed a global
hypertext project, now known as the World Wide Web. The project involved the publication of hypertext
documents linked together by hyperlinks, which would facilitate the search and consolidation of information
for CERN scientists. To implement the project, Tim Berners-Lee (along with his assistants) invented URIs, the

HTTP protocol, and the HTML language. This is a technology, without which it is impossible to imagine the
modern Internet. In the period from 1991 to 1993, Berners-Lee perfected the technical specifications of these
standards and published them. But, nevertheless, officially the year of the birth of the World Wide Web is
1989.

HOW PEOPLE USE THE INTERNET
SHOPPING
Online shopping is very popular nowadays. People are so busy that they do not want to go shopping after
work and waste time. It is much more comfortable sitting at home in a soft chair to shop online, while saving
time. You can buy anything from food, clothes, furniture, electronic equipment to diamonds from Tiffany.
You can also order food online, from fast food to delicacies from the restaurant.

EDUCATION
The Internet provides an excellent opportunity for learning. The huge resources of web sites help students
find the information they need thereby facilitating learning.
The Internet can be used to find the right information, to write essays, reports, conduct research, to read
books and much more.
There are many practical exercises on the Internet for training in various subjects, for example mathematics
or foreign languages.

WORKING
Unlimited opportunities gives the internet for work. Starting from ordinary office affairs, sending mail, ending
with grandiose projects.

People create business online, offer their services. People use the Internet to become famous. For example,
recently blogging has become very popular. Thanks to Youtube they get millions of subscribers and become
world famous. Well-known bloggers receive well-paid contracts.

ENTERTAINMENT
The Internet is very widely used for entertainment purposes. People play games, spend time in social
networks, get acquainted on the Internet. You can also watch movies and TV shows online, watch videos in
YouTube.

COMMUNICATIONS
One of the very important features of the Internet is the ability to support communication. For example, it
used to be very expensive to call abroad. Now, with the Internet, you can contact for free in applications such
as Skype, WhatsApp, Viber and so on.

Access to the Internet.
In 2017, 90% of households in Great Britain had internet access, an increase from 89% in 2016 and 57% in
2006. In terms of access, 73% of adults accessed the internet “on the go” using a mobile phone or
smartphone, more than double the 2011 rate of 36%.
 In terms of purchases, 77% of adults bought goods or services online, up from 53% in 2008.
 Clothes or sports goods were purchased by 56% of adults, making these the most popular online purchase in
2017.
 In 2017, 93% of adults who had bought online in the last 12 months, had done so from online sellers in the UK,
while 31% had bought from sellers in other EU countries and 31% had bought from the rest of the world.

Digital devices used by audiences.
People can access the internet via different devises. As the analysis shows, device usage varies from
generation to generation based upon what the activity is. It can be desktop computer, laptop, tablet or
smartphone.

How customers search for information.
People use different search engines to find the information (Google, Bing, Yahoo!)
. Google
No need for further introductions. The search engine giant holds the first place in search with a stunning
difference of 66% from second in place Bing.
According to the latest netmarketsshare report (January 2018) 74.52% of searches were powered by
Google and only 7.98% by Bing.
Google is also dominating the mobile/tablet search engine market share with 93%!
2. Bing
Bing is Microsoft’s attempt to challenge Google in the area of search, but despite their efforts they still
did not manage to convince users that their search engine can produce better results than Google.

3. Yahoo
Since October 2011 Yahoo search is powered by Bing. Yahoo is still the most popular email provider and
according to reports holds the fourth place in search.
What consumers buy online.
“According to statistics from Forrester Research analysing the bestselling products online, based on sales
levels for 2014, products under the categories of Software, Books, Music and Flowers are on the top of the
ranking, with annual sales of $37.05 billion. Next in line, we have Computer Hardware, Consumer Electronics
and Office Supplies, with $22.8 billion annual sales. Yet, listing the precise items best-selling right now isn’t
easy, as new releases displace previous top products.”

Online video consumption.
"I like watching beauty videos by bloggers on my phone when I'm putting on my own makeup," says Veronica
in Chicago. "It's kind of like talking to a friend when I'm getting ready."

For travel and food videos, people primarily watch on their desktop or laptop. "I watched a video about
Patagonia on my computer," Kylie in New York says. "I was already on my computer going through some
emails and stuff, and it came up on my inbox."
People who watch beauty, fashion, entertainment, and pop culture YouTube videos prefer to watch on their
smartphones.

Consumer trends.
Thanks to technology, life has changed a lot in the last 5 years. Electronic gadgets have become an integral
part of life for almost every human being on earth. Each of us in the house has a computer, a smartphone, a
laptop, a tablet and we can not imagine our life without all of this. Of course, electronic gadgets and the
Internet have changed and made our life easier. All business can be done online, pay for utilities, order any
services and so on. Every day we make purchases online and we do not need to spend time for shopping and
walking with heavy bags, as the delivery of goods is made directly to the house.
Now it's very popular to watch videos in YouTube. Girls look beauty bloggers who talk about cosmetics,
fashion trends, learn to apply makeup, cook, talk about their travels and so on.

In YouTube you can learn everything, for example, how to repair an iPhone or how to shoot a video, how to
work in Photoshop and so on. Just great interest is the video about a healthy lifestyle, fitness and proper
nutrition.
And the popularity of smartphones will not even argue. They are part of our lives. From the morning we wake
up the alarm clock in the smartphone.

Thanks to various applications, we can make our lives better, for example, use slimming and calorie counting
apps, use apps to count the amount of water drunk per day, use fitness apps, learn foreign languages, listen
to books and this list is endless.

In 2018 the number of Internet users pass the 4 billion mark. People are so keen on the Internet that
sometimes they do not notice that life passes by. Children play computer games, instead of spending time
with friends. Parents do not spend time with their children, spending their evenings in social networks. Young
people coming on a date, sit in their phones and do not communicate with each other. People move away
from each other while being near.
The Internet and technology certainly take up most of our lives, but we must not forget that we are people
and we must harmoniously combine technology and real life and not change the real life to virtual.
