Research Synopsis Incidence of Exfoliation Glaucoma in Urban and Rural Populations

Background Pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PXF) is age-related and systemic. Characterized by deposition of fibrillar material in ocular tissues. Can lead to increased IOP and pseudoexfoliation glaucoma (PXFG). PXFG is more aggressive than primary open-angle glaucoma.

Rationale Higher prevalence of PXF in rural India. Likely due to environmental factors and limited healthcare access. Important to guide targeted screening and healthcare policy.

Aim and Objectives Aim: Compare incidence of exfoliation glaucoma in urban vs rural populations over 1 year. Objectives: - Assess incidence rates. - Identify associated risk factors. - Evaluate clinical characteristics and severity.

Methodology Design: Prospective observational cohort study. Sample: 345 participants (172 urban, 173 rural), aged ≥40 years. Sampling: Stratified random sampling from OPD. Diagnosis: Based on clinical signs, IOP, gonioscopy, and field testing.

Expected Outcomes Incidence comparison data between urban and rural populations. Identification of environmental and lifestyle risk factors. Support for targeted screening and prevention in high-risk areas.

PICOT P: Adults ≥40 in urban/rural areas. I: Presence of PXF. C: Urban vs Rural residency. O: Prevalence of exfoliation glaucoma. T: One-year follow-up.
